So I figured out what I was doing wrong and why I couldn't seem to colonize hardly any planets. The brightness of the star matters a LOT, if it's not at least white you can't settle anything but your species's preferred environment without max population boosting techs because otherwise the max population will be negative.

Perhaps dashing straight to plasma cannons is a bit greedy. I need to pace myself more.

Freeorion's not bad. Still a lot of rough edges though, and plenty of missing features. Also bugs and lag.
