@scribus I'm often stumped by the simple cross-section of a circle. Every time I saw off a thick branch or root I think that isn't that bad until I reach the middle, where it's suddenly harder to move material.

I forgot to make some nice pictures. I was 3d-printing a flame frame for a "neon" LED strip. I modeled it myself. A family member wanted one and paid for it with filament https://i.imgur.com/jseJK3i.jpeg

It took me 3 hours to dig out this 40-50 year old rhododendron bush stump https://i.imgur.com/AbYRYNI.jpeg The roots were super nasty. They were as thick as branches. I had to literally dig in with my hand saw and cut the roots under ground.

@adiwan Ever had a baked potato that turned out to have grown around a nice rock? Likewise an unpleasant crunch surprise.
-
@scribus Ooooof.... That is a very nasty surprise. I had something similarly unpleasant: My mother uses a casserole dish made out of glass and one day there were glass chunks in the food. It turned out that due to wear the inner edge of the lid and the dish got so damaged that they eventually broke off. Only in hindsight it was obvious what happened. I got some of the glass pieces but luckily I noticed it very quickly in my mouth and nothing happened to anyone. We threw out both the casserole dish and the food.
-
@adiwan Ooh, that is brutal, damn good luck on that outcome

My favorite mug that I own for about 25 years has finally cracked. The handle broke on its own from the handling and the temperature changes. The crack was relatively clean. I "fixed" it with super glue but I have little confidence that it'll hold more than a year and I think it'll show other crack in that time.

@adiwan ooh try that Japanese thing where you patch it back together with gold
-
@scribus The thought did occur to me. The break was quite clean. Also I got the thought after the glue has already set. I also imagined if the handle breaks completely off that I get myself a good chunk of hard wood and make a wooden mug handle and glue it to the mug with an epoxy glue. The wooden handle wouldn't be dishwasher safe however it will transfer less heat.

I'm 3d-printing myself a grid inlay for a new box I acquired for my miniature paints. With this grid inlay I can insert compatible tiles that won't shift when the box is moved. I want to print this https://www.printables.com/model/638320-parametric-gridfinity-paint-rack for all my Army Painter paints and generic open boxes for my brushes and other random stuff. I could print specific containers for a few things but it'd be overkill.

@adiwan So when do you open up the Etsy shop?
-
@scribus Haha. For this one-off it took me about 8 hours. As a fresh owner of a house there is much to do to fix up this old clunker. I also got this same suggestion from my friends to make this as a side hustle. But to be honest: I rather invest the time to make something for my friends than for complete strangers.
-
@adiwan I can dig it

Exclusive preview! It's not finished but I have nearly completed gift for a friend. The paint is still drying and needs some varnish, as well as a magnet on the back side. Other than that it is practically done. Sadly the colors don't show up well in the photo. The color variations are a little bit too subtle for the lighting and camera. https://i.imgur.com/tZKhdQ5.jpeg

I bought a tool for splicing 3d printer filament. It's difficult as hell. I bought it so I can use up all those "too much to throw away but too short to print anything usable" spools. The main problem is that I end up having a splice that is way too thick to fit through the PTFE tube that will definitely end up as a print failure. At this point I think it is a operator failure than a failure of the tool. I give it more tries until I throw it into the corner.

@adiwan Yeah, I bet there's a "touch" to it that'll take a bit to find
-
@scribus I think too. Also I have the suspicion that the tool I bought is kind of flawed in both handling and execution https://i.imgur.com/rWLHU0z.jpeg It is made such that you put one end into the area with the Teflon sleeve and the other end to the metal hole. Both ends are then heated by a flame (candle, lighter) for a couple seconds and then pulled into the Teflon area and there the ends are pushed together while the plastic is hot. After it has cooled down the screws are loosened and the tool can be removed. The hole in the Teflon area is about 2mm in diameter while the plastic filament is 1.75mm. Ideally the hole should be the same or close in size. Either way pushing the filament into the hole while it's melted is hard as the filament itself tends to naturally curl because it has been wound up on a spool before and hand-straightening is not really easy or effective enough. I need to shave off the extra bulge back to 1.75mm in order to prevent clogs. Wasn't expensive tough.

For a birthday gift for a friend, and a small pokemaniac, I crafted a Mew stone carving (from the first Pokemon movie) out of polymer clay. I used Adobe Illustrator to trace a screenshot and 3D-printed a cookie cutter and stamped it into the polymer clay and added additional stone texture with a ball of aluminium foil. After baking it at 130°C (266°F) for 40 minutes I used the crappiest acrylic paint I own. It did the job but the paint is darkening so much when dry that they turn almost black. With a liberal amount of white and other brighter paint (yellow, orange, red) I got to the end eventually. https://i.imgur.com/D7Nsjy5.jpg
