@ceruleanspark @mrdragon Gentlemen. It has come to my attention that 2999GB of data flowed out of the old server. Please explain.
Saturday, 14-Apr-12 03:23:38 UTC from web- RDN's Lucifer likes this.
-
@cabal that doesn't sound good... 2999 GB???
-
@techdisk42 that's a lot of data 0.0
-
@techdisk42 I don't have that capacity across my whole setup...
-
@lyokotravels could be worse. Could be raining.
-
@renovatedkitchen it's not raining on my side :)
-
@techdisk42 Yes... yes it is... Outgoing Data Transfer Servers - Outbound Transfer 1 Service $534.00 $534.00 Outgoing data transfer of 2966.674 GB. Server name: Cheerilee Coverage Period: Mar 04, 2012 to Apr 03, 2012
-
@cabal "Cheerilee"? I approve.
-
@cabal ouch that's a lot. I don't mind donating as soon as I get my bank account in order.
-
@cabal how does around 3 TB of data just get moved around? By old server, you mean the one that RDN was on and isn't anymore? I don't think RDN takes up 3 TB of space... Maybe 1 TB At absolute max
-
@renovatedkitchen has nothing to do with the old server. I'm sure this is a mistake, but I'd rather that the truth be brought to me before I get nasty surprise from Billing when I call them to investigate... is it even possible to download all that in one month???
-
@techdisk42 The site is only 8 gigs! WTF is this 3TB coming from?!?!?
-
@cabal well, if I had a 3TB HDD and Internet that was faster than the snail speed we get in Canada, I would say maybe, but it would take effort.
-
@cabal I totally wouldn't be surprised if you could blame StatusNet for that. Hmm.
-
@cabal how does a server that has only 8 GBs of files on the hard drive upload/download 3 TB in less than a month? Either someones hacked in and is usin it for nefarious porpoises, or It's gotta be a misplaced decimal... And yes. Porpoises, like dolphins.
-
@renovatedkitchen I get great speed in Toronto. Bell > Rogers.
-
@techdisk42 oh, I get a great deal too. My dad works at bell, so we get discounts and beta stuff. I had VoIP waaay back then. But our line has static in it for sooo long and they are too lazy to fix it. In the states, you get way more for much less.
-
@spectrumscramble exactly. You can't download what isn't there. #confuzzled
-
@renovatedkitchen owhh, beta stuff. :D we have everything on fibe. Phone, web, tv. Fibe = wicked.
-
@cabal Unless that 8 gigs includes the attachments (seems possible, but unlikely, to me), in which case I'm utterly at a loss. (Either way, I guess we won't know for sure until one or both of @ceruleanspark and @mrdragon are back on.)
-
@renovatedkitchen At least until the RIAA gets their stuff through.
-
@spectrumscramble Every single file on RDN is ~8gigs.
-
@eaglehooves RIAA?
-
@minti Download 374.9 copies of RDN?
-
@minti Right, then I _am_ at a complete loss to speculate what's going on. Whatever it is, it sure sounds weird.
-
@eaglehooves Basically. Think about it though, that's bandwidth, and look at how many people visit the site.
-
@techdisk42 I know. It's pretty okay. Im in toronto too. It's kinda neat. Sadly my dad was too late for the Internet tv.
-
@spectrumscramble Look at the number of dashes in total on the server. There's over 100,000 dashes, and every single one is still on the server. Add attachments and user history, and you've got a murdockton of data.
-
@renovatedkitchen The recording industry group that continuously appleses off normal users by trying to stop piracy. They have their name on just about every American attempt to restrict internet access or reduce privacy.
-
@minti But we don't download a full copy of everything when we do.
-
@november Thing is, even with 100,000 dashes, that's still only a maximum of 1000*100000 bytes, or 100MB. And given that each post can have only 1 attachment, every post would have to have a 10MB attachment (which is _clearly_ not the case) for the whole thing to even get close to hitting a third of that weird transfer amount. So I don't think it could be just that.
-
@november (Not to mention that I'm pretty sure 10MB is way above the maximum upload size if PHP is set up even semi-sanely on the server.)
-
@spectrumscramble Did you forget to add in all of the pictures people upload for avatar use, plus all of the user data such as IP and email addresses?
-
@spectrumscramble The maximum is 2 KB. I've uploaded whole zip files and mp3s on here.
-
@november ya mean 2 MB, right?
-
@november Those must have been some really low-fi .mp3s.
-
@november http://i.imgur.com/GiW5w.png That's what was used in march, it's ~19GB
-
@november Yes, but they're inconsequential. Avatars can't be more than a few hundred KiB, even if they were uploaded at the largest size the site permits, and all other user profile details, including email address, are limited to 1000 bytes (or less, depending on field), so when we're talking in terms of multiple gigabytes, that barely even makes a dent.
-
@cabal I really have no idea at all.. All data that we gained didn't even breach the 200gig mark for last month. And that even included the transfers over. So I really have no idea at all for that.
-
@cabal Wat. If it helps narrow down the investigation the only IP we downloaded anything from you via is this server: 217.147.83.20. How fast is your server's outgoing link? Is it even possible for it to serve 3tb of data in that amount of time?
-
@mrdragon @ceruleanspark I have no idea what the hell happend. I am assuming RackSpace screwed up, or we did get hack. In either case, I have to call Billings tomorrow and possibly speak to the network admin in texas to investigate. The old server has been deleted, so I am going to assume that an exploit for attempted DDoS was done, or, we were the middle man in a smurf attack. Which begs the question... who was the target? or BWrape attack.
-
@ceruleanspark @cabal The fastest that we dl'd to was 10mbit/s sometimes I went up to 15 for a little but on average was 10. We did it three times, if you remember we did the first one to see if we could get it to work and what needed to be done. The second one was ready to go, but we waited to see if @purpletinker could do the update before we did the move. Then the third was done and the site moved. I really have no idea what could of happened, but I can't see how it would be possible. Even if say the connections stayed open. It would need to be a serious load from both servers, and my bandwidth graphs and server monitor hasn't given anything large for that scale. As I said, bandwidth didn't pass 200gig.
-
@mrdragon Hay there!
-
@pawnheart Crap.. I've been spotted.
-
@mrdragon Well, with dat Spitfire avatar, you're hard to miss.
-
@mrdragon hmm...not sure if joking.
-
@scribus Indeed, chap. http://rainbowdash.net/attachment/75673
-
@pawnheart I'm never joking. I'm always laughing.
-
@mrdragon You'd be much stealthier if your avatar was less bright orange
-
@mrdragon Cheerio! youtube.com/watch?v=XuUBV943TkY
-
@mrdragon ...a nice sentiment!
-
@ceruleanspark But I like being sseexxxyyy!
-
@mrdragon Put a wonderbolts outfit on.
-
@ceruleanspark You suuuree? http://rainbowdash.net/attachment/75677
-
@mrdragon I'm guessing Rackspace screwed up big time. Will have more info monday.
