In retrospect I should have realized it was a ratings ploy. Having read upcoming plot synopsises, I realize that Brian will probably be coming back in the upcoming Christmas special, which I guess means I'm not free from the Family Guy curse after all. Oh well more cheap, barely satisfying laughs for me.

@mrmattimation They're going that soon with it too? Wow. When the Simpsons got Mr Burns shot they at least had the summer to make you "wonder" if he was dead or not.

@awlderpy I'm not a hundred percent, but Brian is mentioned in several upcoming plot synopsises. Particularly interesting is the upcoming Christmas special, the B-plot of which will involve Stewie trying his hardest to get the one and only thing he wants for Christmas. I'm betting that "thing" is his best pal back.

@mrmattimation I thought it was a play from the get-go. I couldn't fathom why McFarlane would want to kill off what is essentially his own persona in his first show.

@awlderpy The episode initially caught me the grapes off guard. Like, I actually teared up during the funeral. It seemed too dark to be a Family Guy show, you know? And I was even more baffled when the episode ended and Brian still wasn't back, leading me initially to believe it was permanent.

@mrmattimation I haven't even seen the episode; to be quite honest the show doesn't appeal to me as it did before. It's not as if it changed or anything; maybe I just changed in likings for a tv show.

@awlderpy Family Guy actually has changed quite a bit since Steve Callaghan took over as head writer. They've been killing off characters left and right.

@mrmattimation Have they? Ugh. Quite unnecessary, do they think the show really needs less characters?

@awlderpy Yep. Diane, Derek, Muriel, Peter's mom, Bertram, Horace, Loretta, Brian, just to name a few.

@mrmattimation I suppose ancillary characters at best but Family Guy isn't exactly the Hamlet of cartoons.

@mrmattimation Didn't he get run over by a car? Anyway, you're right, FOX will almost have to bring Brian back because of some specials fans will miss, and possibly the fan-rage that FOX will get.
