I think the worst part about Family Guy is that the show itself acknowledges how bad it is. There's one scene in the 2011 episode "Road to the Pilot" where they travel five years into the future. The animation during this sequence is entirely CGI, and during the sequence, Peter enters the room and says "So Chris, I heard you got a D on your report card. Here's a cutaway." They know how lazy the show has gotten (although I think they're disillusioned by how "good" the animation is) and yet they continue on this path.

@mrmattimation It's deconsctructionist humor too. It works for me. What rustles my jimmies is the social commentary it makes.

@pony Social commentary? You mean how once every five years, they'll mention that Rush Limbaugh is an idiot? Which he is?
-
@mrmattimation I don't know enough about Rush to really care about that. I'm hooked on the show's edginess, but at the same time I kind of wish it either, A) did more than make fun of rape-survivor victim shaming or domestic abuse, for example, or B) avoided seriousness altogether on controversial matters.
The times the show does seem to take itself seriously, it's usually on a stance that's counter to my beliefs. That's alright. I mean I can respect that the writer and I believe differently, but in contrast to the irreverence with which the show usually addresses issues, those serious moments make it seem highly pretentious. I enjoy the humor usually because it makes fun of most views and opinions with a bit of equality. (South Park is better at this.)
I'd be interested in seeing Seth Macfarlane's attempt at non-comedy. I've heard he's not very popular for it, and that doesn't surprise me. -
@mrmattimation It's like it's saying.. "Haha! The world is messed up and lets point and laugh!" but then suddenly, "Oh no! Something I care about??! Let's not joke about that. Nosir!"

@pony South Park used to be the king of social commentary. Nowadays it's just making fun of pop culture as far as I can tell though... that's why I stopped watching
-
@pony welcome to constitutionally-protected social commentary
-
@rarity I haven't watched it in ages simply because I don't have cable and never felt motivated to find it online. It's not streamable through Netflix unfortunately.
