        1. @tiffany Ah, makes sense it would involve Kaoru. Lots of fans have posited the idea of him and Shinji as a couple (which is actually fairly believable in context). The scene in that picture is actually INCREDIBLY tense because of the weight of their relationship, romantic or otherwise.

          1. @northernnarwhal If by "fairly believable in context" you mean "Directly confirmed by your much vaunted EOE" then yes.

            1. @ceruleanspark I don't know if I would say "directly confirmed", but a lot of scenes in EoE certainly reinforce the idea. As far as direct confirmation goes, the 3rd Rebuild film articulates to a much greater degree the notion of Kaworu and Shinji loving each other romantically, and even forms the foundation for a lot of the film's emotional framework.

              1. @northernnarwhal I consider the choice he makes between the two giant naked people to be confirmation of his love. After all, everyone else saw the person they loved before dissolving their AT fields

                1. @ceruleanspark That's a good point, although I'd still consider that more indirect confirmation than direct confirmation. I also feel that given how Shinji made the choice to end Instrumentality to Rei the choice of Kaworu instead of her earlier in the film could've just been that Shinji felt more comfortable around him. Since the person Rei took the form of when dissolving everyone's AT fields wasn't necessarily the person they loved as much as the person they trusted the most or felt the closest to, it could've just been reflective of that. Which isn't to say I don't personally believe their relationship was romantic or that I don't want it to be, just that I'm apprehensive to say it was directly confirmed.
