      1. @awl The colouration of the sky that evening was just breathtaking, I absolutely had to frame it against the trees

        1. @northernnarwhal And the powerlines... Take a guess what I just noticed in it.

          1. @awl Lain! Which, in all honestly, most likely influenced me in some subliminal way. The directing in that show stood out to me in such a staggeringly fantastic manner that it's definitely had a major impact in how I view framing devices and shot composition in my own shots and photography ever since I watched it.

            1. @northernnarwhal It impacted me too, to the point I can't any longer hear the hum of electricity without looking back to the show. Definitely an anime I will own a physical copy of.

              1. @awl The complete series is only 30 bucks on Blu Ray and I'm really tempted to buy it soon http://shop.funimation.com/Shop/ShopProductDetail.ss?itemid=79680 Especially since even though I've already watched through it several times I wouldn't mind watching through it again, it's one of my shows (animated or otherwise) of all time.

                2. @northernnarwhal Bookmarked, and yeah I totally agree with you. I can watch it multiple times. Thusfar it's my most favourite anime, and probably favourite shows too. Difficult to say; I might have to watch it again real soon but there's still a bit I would like to get through first.

                  1. @awl Lain is definitely the kind of show that warrants multiple watchings in my opinion, it's incredibly dense (almost to a fault) and many of its events and sequences are told out of order and through reality bending setpieces that constantly subvert the viewer's perception of whatever it is that's happening onscreen. It's full of subtle details and hints but never really spells anything out, so piecing everything together and really drawing conclusions not only about the themes the show was articulating but also just what the hell even happened in it are all part of what made it so engaging for me to watch.

                  2. @awl On the topic of Serial Experiments Lain and shows to get through, I'd recommend adding Texhnolyze to your list. It's sort of a dark experimental cyberpunk show that was written by the same guy who wrote Lain and had the same character designer too. It's not quite as surreal as Lain (though hardly anything is) but it's a really incredible viewing experience for sure and really unlike any other anime I've ever seen. It's incredibly minimalistic and sparse yet also incredibly subtle and detailed, I don't think I've ever watched something so existentially desolate in my life. It works on a very, very slow boil, so you'll have to be patient with it at first, but stick with it as it's an incredibly complex and rewarding show with an impeccable command of writing and atmosphere.

                    1. @northernnarwhal Added! I'm sure as a recommendation from you I'll like it at the very least.

                      1. @awl Thanks, I'm happy all my recommendations thus far have been hits! I think you'll really enjoy Texhnolyze as well, especially given the anime I know you've enjoyed thus far (Serial Experiments Lain, Ghost in the Shell, etc.)

                        1. @northernnarwhal The latter of which also had appealed to me in more ways than one, as I'm rather a fan of political thrillers set in the not too distant future. Right now, although it wasn't necessarily recommended I'm watching Gurren Laggan, a bit apart from the two we mention here, but not bad thusfar.

                          1. @awl Gurren Lagann is an incredibly fun show because of its boundless sense of energy, and because it manages to constantly build upon itself in every way leading up until its finale. In my experience it's one of those "love it or hate it" shows where you'll either find it awfully endearing or awful, depending on your priorities going into it (I personally sit on the former half of that discussion). I found that while its drama isn't necessarily very well grounded it's not too much of an issue considering how larger than life the show is trying to be in the grander scheme of things. For me the show's greatest strengths aren't necessarily in its writing but in its characters, setpieces, and stylistic choices, all of which are pretty fantastic.

                            1. @northernnarwhal Yeah I'm already getting that profound sense of energy just seeping through every pore of the show thusfar, and it's a nice turn away from the slower pacing of the Stanalone Complex series, just that it's so insane. I like it enough to actually want to finish the series and not feeling to need to, just being 6 episodes in thusfar.

                              1. @awl Yeah, if anything else the show is just very entertaining to watch. I think "spectacle" is a good word that captures the show's essence really well.
