@awl On the topic of Serial Experiments Lain and shows to get through, I'd recommend adding Texhnolyze to your list. It's sort of a dark experimental cyberpunk show that was written by the same guy who wrote Lain and had the same character designer too. It's not quite as surreal as Lain (though hardly anything is) but it's a really incredible viewing experience for sure and really unlike any other anime I've ever seen. It's incredibly minimalistic and sparse yet also incredibly subtle and detailed, I don't think I've ever watched something so existentially desolate in my life. It works on a very, very slow boil, so you'll have to be patient with it at first, but stick with it as it's an incredibly complex and rewarding show with an impeccable command of writing and atmosphere.
