  1. I'm pretty sure that George Lucas has never made a good movie on purpose. Star Wars was good because somebody at the test screenings said "this movie is a piece of crap you RETARD, change it". He says Empire Strikes Back is the worst because he had the least to do with it.

    1. @mrmattimation My first thoughts after watching The Force Awakens were "This feels like if A New Hope were done by an actually competent filmmaker". Which isn't to say I dislike A New Hope, it's a great film, but you can tell lots of its best elements came into place by circumstance, like how he'd stumbled across the Monomyth from old Westerns and borrowed the Jedi from classic samurai films.

      1. @northernnarwhal Zach Hadel put it pretty well in this stream he's doing. He said that he thinks George Lucas "Mr. Magoo'd" his way through A New Hope.

        1. @mrmattimation I feel like the people you discussed earlier telling him how awful the film was at the time are kind of important too, because when you look back at that prequel trilogy he was pretty much surrounded entirely by yes men telling him he was a genius who could do no wrong, so the only opinion he really ever took into consideration was his own.

          1. @northernnarwhal It's really hard to get the actual details of the movie's production outside of "it was troubled" straight because George Lucas has said a different thing every single time he was asked about it. There are a million different stories but one thing that seems to stay consistent is that the first cut only contained about 30-40% of what's actually in the movie today. Steven Spielberg is reportedly the only person in the test audience who liked that first cut.

            1. @mrmattimation Well I know from anecdotes by the actors in Star Wars that even they weren't really taking it seriously because they figured it would flop. Alec Guinness stated numerous times that he regretted doing the film.

          2. @northernnarwhal Also for the record, Lucas thinks that the reason people didn't like the first cut is because the special effects weren't good enough.

            1. @mrmattimation Yeah, whereas the former producer told him people were more invested in the story and characters. Not that the prequels were good visually or narratively.
