I have a hard time understanding the whole "Trump is bad because he has ties with Russia"
If your country has a bad relationship with a rival, wouldn't it be the best scenario to have a government that fixes said relationships and can manage a mutually beneficial agreement?Friday, 03-Mar-17 14:42:35 UTC from web-
@nerthos You are assuming that, at any point, you have heard a full story from anyone in USG or Putin's FSB. At this rate, Russia and FedGov will be fighting to be koshi-ginchaku to China.
>AT&T is the sumo champion, they said, and KDD is its "koshi-ginchaku," its "belt-holding assistant." The word literally means "waist purse" but seems to have rude connotations along the lines of "jockstrap carrier."-
@somercet I'm not talking about specifics, I'm talking of how ridiculous the idea of "government bad because they talk with enemy" is.

@nerthos it's a little bit more complicated than that. People in Trump's campaign were making deals with the Russians before Trump was even elected. This is known as "treason" in most countries, but here it is known as "um fake news??????"

@mrmattimation Don't basically all politicians do this? AFAIK that's common practice, chatting up other countries while in campaign.

@nerthos under current U.S. Law, it actually is SUPER illegal to have diplomatic meetings if you are not yet in a federal position to do so. Besides which, Jeff Sessions lied about it under oath, so even if he hadn't broken any laws before, he definitely has now.

@mrmattimation Well, I guess that makes sense. Kinda weird but oh well.

@nerthos The other guy accused of colluding with Russians, Michael Flynn, was formerly a military general as well and he was apparently receiving monetary gifts from Russian authorities during unauthorized visits to the country, which raises a million red flags regardless of your party affiliation.

@mrmattimation That I do agree is bad.

@nerthos He ended up resigning from Trump's cabinet, so that's that problem dealt with anyhow.

What diplomatic meetings? A senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee (Sessions) has had over 25 meetings with foreign ambassadors. If those were illegal, you'd think someone would notice. What information do you possess that any of these meetings were or were not "diplomatic" (if you can define that word)?
>Sessions lied about it under oath
Ah, then you may lapse back into your coma. Surely nothing can stop the perjury train now? And an honest man has nothing to fear? @mrmattimation @nerthos

@somercet @mrmattimation I'll leave you two to argue US law, it's not my field of expertise.

We're watching one mobster push another one into a trash compactor after arguing about the restaurant bill. You say, "How can you be that angry about a few bucks?" and I'm thinking, "I just witnessed a Mob hit."
Speech with "enemy nations" is tightly controlled in FedGov. Sometimes for good reasons, sometimes for personal or political gain, but that's how it is.
I have no answer for you. @nerthos-
@somercet And I agree in the case of an actual enemy, but not in the case of countries you're at peace with. It's more important to be in good terms with those that can Fluffle Puff you up than with the rest.
