So if I install an OS to my hard drive, can I uninstall it later?
-
@lovetolerateandsquee Depends what it is. Ususally "uninstalling" it is whiping the entire drive clean.

@minti Well damn. My dad isn't letting me install Linux because he's afraid of free stuff.
-
@lovetolerateandsquee Tell him that Linux is more stable then slow windows xD
Thursday, 04-Oct-12 18:00:46 UTC from web-
@shadowdash454 I tried. "It dosen't cost money, how can we trust it?"
-
@lovetolerateandsquee Um thats the most bull**** saying I have ever heard. It's "Open" Which means you can look at the code and change it if you want to

@lovetolerateandsquee It is open-source, you can literally look at the code. Same goes for Mozilla Firefox. How can you trust Windows? You pay for it, but you can't look at the code. There is absolutely no way you can be sure Windows doesn't send private info around, but you can be sure of that with Linux.

@omni @lovetolerateandsquee Also, if you wouldn't be able to trust it, it wouldn't be the most used Operating System for Super Computers, Web Servers and Smartphones (Android), would it? :P

@omni Parent logic.

Oh god, "robots.txt" is being requested. inb4 Google is indexing me...
Thursday, 04-Oct-12 18:05:01 UTC from web-
@omni What IS robots.txt?
Thursday, 04-Oct-12 18:05:43 UTC from web-
@thelastgherkin robots.txt is a small file on a server which tells web robots (like Google's Search Engine) if they are allowed to index the site or not.
Thursday, 04-Oct-12 18:06:55 UTC from web-
@omni Ah, I see. That explains the name, which was what I was wondering about.

@lovetolerateandsquee He does know Google, Facebook and billions of other websites run Linux, right? :P Oh well, guess there's no convincing him, parents can be so stubborn about things they don't understand.
Thursday, 04-Oct-12 18:08:43 UTC from web-
@omni He thinks it's different because it's "the whole computer" that's now "running on hacks". I don't even know where to start...
-
@lovetolerateandsquee Wait, wait. What? Running on hacks? Huh? What is that even supposed to mean?
Thursday, 04-Oct-12 18:11:24 UTC from web-
@omni I DON'T KNOW

@omni That's some CSI-dialogue right there, man. XD
Thursday, 04-Oct-12 18:13:40 UTC from web-
@candlescribus I don't watch CSI :P
Thursday, 04-Oct-12 18:14:36 UTC from web-
@omni Nor do I, really, but I saw an episode with my grandma. They were going on with all kinds of computery terms, and she said, "I guess all that makes sense to you, doesn't it?" to which I replied, "Nope. Half of what they say isn't a real term, and the other half is used wrong."
Thursday, 04-Oct-12 18:15:58 UTC from web-
@candlescribus We need to see the perp through the reflection in that spoon. Zoom in and enhance.
Thursday, 04-Oct-12 18:17:59 UTC from web-
@thelastgherkin Alright, now use Visual Basic to make a GUI so we can see what he looks like without the beard.

@omni I would try to make a halfhearted statement about shows where it just sits on a desk in the corner of the family room, but eventually it'll get turned on and have some silly BSOS and you're completely right. XD

@omni This argument is kind of misleading. The vast majority of people looking at the code for firefox wouldn't even know what they were looking at.
Thursday, 04-Oct-12 18:21:28 UTC from web-
@ceruleanspark I don't consider it to be misleading, as it's actually literally possible. It's a more legit argument than "Linux is free, you can't trust it". What else should I say against the "you can't trust what's free" argument except that you can technically see what it is doing and that many huge corporations use it?
Thursday, 04-Oct-12 18:23:09 UTC from web-
@omni I mean "literally" there, not "technically".
