I don't see why English is a required class past the 9th grade. By that point I think we're fluent.

@zeldatra immigrants.
-
@renovatedkitchen That's the thing, here immigrants get separated into their own English class suited to their level of fluency. So why make everyone who can already speak English well take it?
Sunday, 18-Nov-12 23:48:39 UTC from web-
@zeldatra so we can read some crappy books and keep more teachers employed
-
-
-
@zeldatra if the general population is anything to go by, that's when people stop learning. You do learn more past then, most people just choose not to.
-
@zeldatra The class is supposed to be there to teach the structure of the language, not how to use it. You're supposed to learn that on your own.
Sunday, 18-Nov-12 23:48:31 UTC from web-
@nerthos And they should have already taught the structure by the 9th grade.
Sunday, 18-Nov-12 23:49:20 UTC from web-
@zeldatra Problem is, more than half the people in the world find that knowledge eldritch.

@zeldatra You think we're fluent at that point? Read an internet post from anyone in high school.
Sunday, 18-Nov-12 23:48:43 UTC from web -
@zeldatra Even beside the point, though, English class isn't teaching you the language itself past 9th or 10th grade. After that they're teaching you how to understand deeper meanings in literature and other stuff like that.
Sunday, 18-Nov-12 23:50:11 UTC from web-
@redenchilada The problem with that is that teachers barely understand what they're talking about.
Sunday, 18-Nov-12 23:52:07 UTC from web-
@nerthos Depends on the teacher. Mine actually has a clue. Guess that's the perk of AP classes though
Sunday, 18-Nov-12 23:53:11 UTC from web-
@redenchilada I had two who understood, but weren't able to teach anything due to the stupidly low level of the class.

@zeldatra @redenchilada I'm in 10th grade. We are STILL working with where was/were is supposed to be. I mean, seriously - We learned that 5 years ago!
-
@derpyshy That's because if you listen to the kids around you none of them actually remember that
Sunday, 18-Nov-12 23:54:57 UTC from web-
@redenchilada I know... I wish I could study English like if I were English, not Norwegian...
-
@redenchilada Yet anothr reason as to why I don't like the way school works... In a class of 12 students, 3 students are way ahead of the class, and not learning to their full potential, 5 students follow the pace of the class, and 4 are way behind, not understanding a thing.
-
@derpyshy A class of 12 students. It sounds like paradise.
Monday, 19-Nov-12 00:01:22 UTC from web-
@nerthos my last years of the high school had 7 stuudents
Monday, 19-Nov-12 00:02:09 UTC from web-
@mushi Here the classes are of about 35 people, since law makes you go to school until 18.
Monday, 19-Nov-12 00:03:13 UTC from web-
@nerthos ehre too, but my school was lame

@nerthos My class is at around 18 :p

@derpyshy My mother is a physics teacher. She has a class of 39. 20 of them are waaaay behind.
Monday, 19-Nov-12 00:02:29 UTC from web-
@nerthos Exactly. That's because they teach them something, some of them get it, some don't, but they just move on to the next topic either way.

@woona that depends on the author or outlet. They're not trying to just show you that for the sake of showing you it, they're trying to show you it so you can learn how to properly analyze and write creatively, something that most people can't do.
-
@woona I'm pointing at the number of students, not the capabilities of them.
Monday, 19-Nov-12 00:03:39 UTC from web -
@woona A class of more than 25 can't worl.
Monday, 19-Nov-12 00:05:59 UTC from web-
@nerthos you should see som of my classes at the college
Monday, 19-Nov-12 00:07:00 UTC from web -
@nerthos My English class is 30 and it works fine

@redenchilada Weird.

@nerthos @redenchilada my calculus 2 class had 40 something

@woona They should do classes of 16-20 people for the kids who can keep up, and then classes of 30 for the rejects.
Monday, 19-Nov-12 00:08:43 UTC from web-
@nerthos but my separaion methods and phys chem os polymer class have like 9 people in each one

@chibiterasu That's what happen when the teachers are idiots.
Monday, 19-Nov-12 00:10:53 UTC from web -
@chibiterasu I agree
-
@woona Pretty much.
Monday, 19-Nov-12 00:11:50 UTC from web -
@chibiterasu also, all the labeling of kids as lower grade and not giving them support. Most kids just need a good kick of motivation. They should have classes to find that motivation
-
@woona I mean like an actual class. Like math or biology.
-
@chibiterasu well, I never had motivation. I just wanted to live a simple life till I fizzle away. Now that I have reason to live and a goal that I know is achievable, im doing everything myself to get myself up to that level
-
@chibiterasu Mhm. Life's hard, but only you can hold yourself back
-
@woona I'm naturally smart I guess, I just don't try at all. Or never did try at all.
