@zeldatra Explain to me how Windows is easy to use. It's inconsistent (just look at how much people don't know when to single or double click, even with ONLY Microsoft software), needs a lot of care (antivirus software which needs to be managed), is unstable and can't be adapted to the individual user all that much. Now, I'm not saying Linux is perfect, but at least it is consistent (assuming you choose one desktop environment and don't mix-and-match applications), needs very little maintenance (no antivirus, one central updater) and can be tweaked to the user's wishes (in this case: only a browser). You can't tweak Windows that much.

@omni i would use linux if everything i do worked flawlessly on it. my 228 Steam games RIGHT NOW, dont work on linux... and even this steam for linux thing only a handfull of games work, so im stuck wit the murdockty WINDUURS

@unhipdruid It's cool man, Linux has a handful of free alternatives which are totally way better than your 200+ games.

@zeldatra lets not start... but otherwise, i LOVE linux, i love all the different distros etc, but some for strange reasons just end up breaking, Kubuntu would just STOP. without warning just lock up instantly and 100% for no reason... meh il experiment some more soon...

@unhipdruid Steam games working or not is of no importance for a system which will only be used for browsing the web and for nothing else. I do know how you feel, though (even though I don't run any non-free software myself)

@omni yes, i do wish with all my heart that i can use linux 100% and trust it all. but i always end up loosing it in the end... but i went from MACs then to windows and i find everything easy to use really...

@redenchilada You also did not mention any slightly useful info. Your argument is about as valid as saying it's hard to install Firefox on Windows 7 because Windows 3.1 crashed on you once. Also, as stated countless times by now, the system will not have a file manager, making your scenario impossible and thus irrelevant.

@redenchilada The fact that you describe it as an "angry rant" means you missed most of the discussing. Happens to me at times as well, though, so I don't blame you. I'm just getting a bit annoyed at "install Windows" when the system in question should only run a browser and this has been stated often, something Windows is simply not capable of (it needs the desktop environment). The other thing I was slightly annoyed about was you not stating a distro or version number or anything. Linux 3.6 for example is a huge improvement over Linux 2.6, just like kernel improvements between Windows versions. File manager software also improves through time. The thing is, the low amount of info made it impossible to judge if this was still relevant in general, even though it wouldn't be for the system in question. Sorry for my harsh replies, though, I was just getting enough of people seemingly ignoring the system's purpose.

@omni I honestly don't remember much about what I used. Just that it was some version of Puppy from around late 2010 running from a live CD. And while I personally don't see how having a system with nothing but a web browser can be useful, I'm not gonna argue that it's an inherently bad idea.

@redenchilada Ah, Puppy. Yeah, that one is quite advanced and sometimes unstable, so that could explain it. I also think that you can't do much with only a browser, but we're talking about someone who didn't manage to get used to the Window taskbar in the 95 days so we, at very least, have to start as minimal as possible. I hope that's understandable, at least.

@zeldatra I see you don't know it either, or are forgetting to mention things. Even then, why does he NEED a desktop if he'll use nothing but a browser? That's overcomplicating it. He gets a browser, and that's that. Nothing more. No desktop environment, no file manager, nothing but a browser. Long story short: Windows cannot be tweaked to be only a browser, and is therefore unsuitable for the task at hand.

@widget Unity is also way too hard, according to my dad. Apparently having more than a few buttons is going to make it impossible to use the system for him, so I ended up jumping through some loops to make a Parabola GNU/Linux-libre system which automatically logs in as him and then starts an X session which only runs epiphany, the very simple 4-buttons and address bar browser from the GNOME team also know as "Web".

@omni @widget To turn the system down, he has to press the power button on the laptop. I already found out how to configure systemd to listen to ACPI events (was quite easy, actually, just uncommenting a line).

@widget I expect him to be able to click links. I'm sure he'd need some help at the beginning, and we'd probably have to write some notes for him, but I really can't make it any easier than that. I can only hope he becomes able to.

@omni To me it sounds like he doesn't really want a computer or internet access. If he wants to operate a car he also needs to learn how to use the steering wheel operate the lights, wipers, ignition, check the oil, refuel and learn the rules regulating traffic.
