  1. So, unsuprisingly, Grandma hates Windows 8. I'll probably put Ubuntu on her machine next time I'm home.

    5. @fortecadenza Why go for ubuntu though, when you could go for winXP?

      1. @nerthos I am not sure if you are trolling

        1. @critialcloudkicker If the hardware is old enough, I'm completely serious. I wish I could downgrade 7 to XP on this computer.

          1. @nerthos Well given that windows XP is simply AWESOME I can agree, I however can not say that running any hardware that was made after 2007 with Windows XP is a good idea. Now I do not know grandmothers as a whole, but I do know mine. Her PC comes from the 2009 era. And she likes to be able to use applications such as "hema fotoboek" ( which is a piece of software witch allows you to make photo books ) and is a terrible scaredycat of anything that could possibly and remotely be a virus. So along with compatibility issues and whatnot. My grandmother uses windows 7. Although I must admit I would rather see her using Ubuntu or a different Linux distro... Hence I think of Windows XP as a solid relic from the past, also "good times"

            1. @critialcloudkicker Yes, it comes down to hardware. As long as XP supports the hardware, IMO it's the best option. XP has no serious security issues, proven by experience by using it for almost a year without an antivirus, spending lots of time on 4chan and places linked from there, downloading torrents and all that. I still use it if I can, and if I can't, I use win7. I don't see Linux as an option since more than half the software I always used/use regularly is Windows only, and I don't need any of the options that Linux offers that are not offered by Windows too.

              1. @nerthos Agreed, a lot, and I mean A LOT of linux software has to be made before I'll be able to make a serious plunge into GNU goodness. The sad part is of course that nearly all the end-user PC's are running on some form of Windows. Leaving all the people who develop special software for -anyone knows what end- ( such as a photo-book print service ) for the Windows platform, and 80% of the time it does not work 100% under Windows, Immagine what Wine would do *shrug*. I will however get myself a nice EEE PC running Linux in the near future. If only so people who do not know linux stay away from it like it is deseased... makes me grin inside :D

                1. @critialcloudkicker oh, BTW. I meant in Holland... Seriously we have almost NO hipsters sipping unpronounceable forms of coffee while they are on their precious Mac/I-product either

                2. @critialcloudkicker The only reason I would use linux is for secure storage of information in an offline computer, because, as you said, people stay away from it. My netbook has a linux partition I'm going to format since I used it two times in like tw years.

                  1. @nerthos I have a laptop from the stone ages who ran linux from my fuse-closet acting like an IRC-proxy and HTTP-proxy aswell as my personal FTP amongst other stuff like secure storage and encryption. It ran for about 9 years, It recently became unstable due to a freak leap-second incident. I have to replace it sooner or later for I miss it. Sort of shows how epic linux is for the long run does it not :P. Talking about that thing, Anyone knows where I can get some SuSe 4.0 install disks ?

                    1. @critialcloudkicker I don't have the slightest idea.

          1. @nerthos She hasn't told me yet. Is it even possible to roll back to XP on a preinstalled Windows 8 computer?

            1. @fortecadenza Yeah, format and install.
