  1. Games Workshop is trying to claim ownership of the /concept/ of a space marine? That's...ludicrous, even for their moronic IP enforcement department.

      1. @thelastgherkin Actually they were never called Space Marines there. But yes, prior art does exist.

        1. @ceruleanspark Actually it looks like they only own the name "Space Marine" in the fields of titles for gaming, books, and media. So one can certainly invent space marine characters, so long as they are never named as such. (The 70s Flash Gordon cartoon offers up "Aerial Navy" as an alternative.)

          1. @thelastgherkin The protection only applies if there is "Reasonable chance of confusion" in the covered areas. Given how incredibly distinctive GW's setting is, it is held by the defendant that this protection does not apply.

            1. @ceruleanspark I'd be sort of flattered if anything I did could be confused for official materials. Of course I'd also be totes angry at the ensuing legal battle but whatevs.

    4. @snowcone They're mostly attacking small, independant authors who can't defend themselves at the moment, so they'll certainly win this round.
