  1. Wait, Minnesotans pronounce it 'eye-talian'? That's pretty cute. Also I never heard anyone say it that way here but adverts don't lie.

    1. @awlderpy I've heard it a lot from Michigan-ites and some Utahns

      1. @pony I had only heard it in cinema before. Was striking to see it in an advert, a local one of all things.

        1. @awlderpy it is kinda cute. xD

          1. @pony I find speech and pronunciation patterns in local patoisés quite interesting, sometimes trying to mimic them.

            1. @awlderpy I've never had enough ambition to try and mimic them, but I love hearing them side by side.

              1. @pony For me it was kind of like an attempt at blending in, although most of the time proves fruitless. It doesn't sound right when it's forced.

                1. @awlderpy I had to change when I moved from Utah to Maryland, but I was only 11 so it was pretty easy fortunately.

                  1. @pony Being younger definitely helps. I keep remembering how far I took into trying to develop a Sardinian cadence, even learning a few words in their language, when living over there. That ended pretty quickly. In retrospect learning English was no where near as difficult.

                    1. @awlderpy oh yeah. If you're working between countries it's even harder. I picked up many of the Sicilian mannerisms in Italian, but I always had an accent. In school I've absorbed more of the Venetian and some Roman patterns, but I can hardly keep them separate much less master them.

                      1. @pony Surprising. I'd have thought that in schools they would attempt to teach more Florentine but I suppose it depends on if it's missionary school (presuming here, bad memory) and where they believe they'll be sending you. I hadn't learned one bit of what differentiates Venetian cadences from Italian 'proper', but then again I learned mostly from Sardinians.

                        1. @awlderpy Ah well, you're right about the Florentine really. It's just that the professor I spent most of my lectures with is Venetian. She admitted she tried to always adhere to the Florentine though iirc, so it's likely I've picked that up as well. Really, the only class that it made any difference in was phonetics. The rest didn't matter.

                          1. @pony That's actually pretty neat, learning the Florentine way from a Venetian. From what I understand Veneto still teaches it's own language. Good luck on your review btw!

                            1. @awlderpy thanks! I went well. Was short and sweet. He didn't say yes or no about submitting the feedback I suggested so I went with the second copy leaving it out, but we still had a good discussion. He's a great supervisor.

    2. @awlderpy In England, pronouncing it that way is typically associated with racists.

Monday, 14-Oct-13 09:14:20 UTC from StatusNet Desktop
      1. @ceruleanspark I figured this as when I heard it in cinema it was associated with racism towards them. A youtube video I was watching ran an advert for the local Fiat dealership and the 'customers' were pronouncing it thusly. It was a bit strange.

      2. @ceruleanspark in exaggerated cases I usually associate it with the deep south which is stereotyped as very ethnocentric.

        1. @pony "Stereotyped"

          1. @ceruleanspark xD I tend to reserve judgement for cultures I haven't actually experienced first hand. My wife would probably say it's no stereotype, but she actually has family from there.
