Just wrote up a hack-ish tweak for the Status.Net User class to automatically put new registering users into a group based on its ID number. My PHP skills aren't the hottest, so if anypony would check it / improve it, that'ld be nice. It should be functional as is, though. http://retl.info/extra/pony/RDN/defaultgroupsnippet.zip (Zip contains snippet and example.) !notice !techponies http://is.gd/LUslGX

Hmm. Tried installing StatusNet Desktop in my linux VM. Boy, did it ever not work at all. Times like this, I wish I actually knew what I was doing. !techponies

The herd has too much control over meh... I just spent the past hour making an Archlinux package of the pony font 'CelestiaMedium' and submitted it to the AUR when i could have just easily shove it into one of the font directories and forgotten about it.... What Have I Done?!?! http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=48293

Any !techponies ever put Linux on an old Mac blue-and-white G3? I looked into NetBSD, something about flashing the firmware, shelved the project for the time. Anyway, thinking maybe Puppy or another lightweight distro - any input? Thanks in advance!

All right! Arch on my netbook. Absolute victory. Now, to force myself to learn the CLI more. #whiteandnerdy !techponies

!techponies I remember when I got my first 1.4 MB 3 1/2" disk. That cherries was DOUBLE DENSITY, man. You could fit ten whole hypercard stacks on it and still have room to spare. On that day, I truly was a god among nerds.

@puzzlemint I remember bringing those to school full of emulators and roms for NES. Nothing says fun like doing comp work and playing Legend of Zelda at the same time !techponies !vgp
-
!techponies @puzzlemint Double density disks were 720k (880k if you had an Amiga.) 1.44MB disks had an "HD" logo, and could be identified by their additional square hole opposite the write-protect switch. and I have piles of them.

Any other !techponies (or anyone) have issues with StatusNet on smartphones not picking up all the updates on the public stream? I've got a 9+ hour gap, and I'd posted from my computer during that time so I know the site was live.

@scribus You're posting on here from an Android? What version and how happy are you with it, if you mind me asking? My boyfriend is really attached to his and I need a new phone, so I've been considering picking one up!

@firefly It's al LG Ally, Verizon network. I'm pretty pleased with it, but it does have some quirks at times (mostly touchscreen lag) and it won't run all of the available apps (usually high-powered games), but that's mostly hardware. The OS is nice, I'd like to shoot for stronger hardware on my upgrade. Mostly, I chose this one for the physical keyboard. I have a tough time with virtual keyboards. You could probably ask other !techponies for more input.

@rotation ¯\(°_0)/¯ I honestly don't remember. I think I was just trying to get a grasp on how 3d transformations were done. And then looking at the source again, apparently I made the 3d thing in a different class. In physics class, I made a 2d ascii drawing engine thing, then rendered fractals for the rest of the school year. Didn't forget that. Good times. :3 http://youtu.be/-kyZW4bMQg0 !techponies

@pride woah what? Just 16? Apparently everything I code is too condensed. I'm pretty sure I've gotten a density of two bugs per line in one function before. !techponies
-
@sci !techponies I then read a more recent paper from 2002 that said it could be anywhere between 2 or 75. According to the paper, that means that Linux kernels have roughly 150,000 bugs, and Windows XP about 300,000. #misquotedinformationshouldnotbeusedasfactualevidence

@rotation It's been so long since I've really coded anything that I don't remember any interesting storied off the top of my head. However, I do remember recently looking back and stuff and wondering "how the hell did I do that?" Example: apparently I coded a basic 3d engine with javascript. Using notepad and internet explorer. In my physics class. Then completely forgot about it. What the hell? !techponies

@pride !techponies HA! Love it. I'm actually more a sys admin. I'm just in charge of dredging the logs for errors to ASSIST our dev's with bug triage.

@spittiepie Ah, got it. The wingpanel made it look WAY similar to the shots in Ars Technica's Gnome 3.0 review from today !techponies
Thursday, 07-Apr-11 19:14:25 UTC from web -
@mithent Oh yeah. We're a team of 6 people, and for the sake of people not from our dept. we label our seating areas with our name for easy identification. So, time and again someone will print up new "names" for us and assign them based on attributes. Previously it had been Marvel Comics Characters, Gender Swaps of our names, etc. So I did ponies. No one had seen the show on my team, and it lead to them having to watch/research to determine the background of their assigned pony. She had Pinkie Pie. She was... mad. She ended up watching the show and then changed her pony "name" to Nightmare Moon.... after that, she just fell into the fandom of it. If tl;dr: I played a prank involving ponies, got her to watch the show !techponies
