@conventrix Our rank system is totally different to yours. It takes 2-4 years to go from Private to Lcpl, then another 2-4 years to get to Cpl. If you managed to get both in 2 years, then your Sgt is postponed by some time to make sure you don't advance to quickly. If you did it in the 3-4 years it's just another 3-4 years for sgt. For Staff it's a case of which placement will arrive for you after a set time and that you excel. For WO2 (Company Sgt Mjr) you need to wait for the current one to step down or retire. Same goes for WO1 (Regimental Sgt Mjr) Once you hit Staff and above you could go to officer rank. But due to you already dealing with front line work and such running through your veins it's usually to hard for a regular solider to adapt and change.
