Typically a character should only have one or two traumas that, when mixed with the circumstances of the character or perhaps his or her choices, create the tragic heartstring-pulling mood. But when it's just an unbelievable train wreck to the point when you can almost laugh at its absurdity, THAT's when it's a bit too much.
