@mushi So the Lain of the Wired was incredibly psychotic and a megalomaniac, so she was given a physical body that didn't retain memory of her existence as an AI so she could develop and have a more human and affectionate personality as an overseer of the Wired, but the problem is she then becomes aware of her own existence and is conflicted initially with leaving. Since she performs a system reset on reality and basically erases everyone's memories the show's ending poses the paradoxical question that if a person or idea was not remembered, did it ever exist? There's a lot more to the series but this is as summarized as I can make it. Oh, the aliens were just there to throw you off, and symbolize the confusion from an influx of information.
