@nybill About a week ago, (while I was deploying a blog) I deleted my #statusnet directory by mistake and lost my instance. I have never been able to restore a SN site from a backup. After failing several attempts to restore, I got so frustrated with it and decided to stop using #statusnet entirely. Deleted all of my accounts :D But I just managed to recover everything from a backup. This is not something I will recommend to my friends. Not until #StatusNet is ready.

yeah :-( it's not entirely #Evan's "fault". The scared, put-off #identi.ca users could just look out for other communities, software (like #statusnet or #friendica), not sure if it's only "laziness" or the lost #trust (in #opensource run things). #otoh each one of us can do more PR for such communities/software: the failure to do that helps in the end big silos like #twitter (not sure if comparing it to the elections is a good analogy: people who do #not vote will get hurt in the end)

sigh you got to have some email notification system. if not it’s difficult to keep an eye on replies etc, specially when the number of contacts goes higher and higher. #thinkingaloud #statusnet

@laurelrusswurm I assume at least some twitter users who already run self-hosted wordpress, drupal, mediawiki etc will try running their own instances if there is proper documentation for #statusnet. Not all of them know how to setup a vps, LAMP and install wordpress via ssh. But they surely know how to install, run and backup a decent site that depends on LAMP. They use gui tools, and interfaces such as cpanel. I am shocked to see how this aspect was ignored till the very end of #identiverse , as if they wanted to keep the ability of killing this non-tech userbase when needed @mcscx

@pztrn @lnxw37 IMHO, this advantage is neutralized by poor documentation. Even if it is (technically) possible to install #statusnet on a shared host, it isn’t documented properly. People who currently run statusnet instances are those who can actually deploy everything from scratch. Because I don’t know how to run a #vps I went for the auto installer on a shared host. Auto installer messed up the installation. This is what will happen if #twitter users start coming this way. By documentation I mean things like this http://mini.alochana.net/url/255 and this http://mini.alochana.net/url/794

@quix0r @lnxw37 I think it's important to at least maintain #compatibility: it's not easy for everyone to upgrade - PHP version! #statusnet

Federated social web is a reality. #statusnet alone has over 250 active servers all over the world http://mini.alochana.net/url/704 !fediverse

#Evan posted yesterday at twitter: "I've still got more than #2000 #StatusNet sites running on http://status.net " https://twitter.com/evanpro/status/368187950418259969 though I think he wants to ultimately move them to pump, but who knows

@thelovebug but that woudl be expected, comparing something essentially pre-alpha to something relatively mature (even thougfh that needs work, too) #pump.io #social #statusnet
