    Speaking of which, got the homework from an assignment where I used ponies to talk about discrimination vs fair selection. Squee!: "The ponies are looking for a new pet for Rainbow. The requirements are awesomeness, coolness, being able to fly fast, able to fly well, and taking the toy from a cat. This is discrimination because the turtle has no chance, but he rescues Rainbow and so she wants to have him for a pet."

      @patch It's not discrimination in most cases, since for example, if you're looking for a sharpshooter, you can't let a guy who lacks fingers enter the competition. The turtle proved the best pet just by chance, and because Rainbow Dash was careless and had an accident.

        @nerthos I agree. Not every student fully grasped the concept, but reports like this just make me smile. They also show me how I failed to communicate the idea or who isn't grasping it in what way, allowing me to tailor my reviews. One student pointed out a great example "Rainbow discriminates (against) the wasp and the butterfly for being too small. This is discrimination because size is nothing to do with the job."

          @patch I sincerely hate the term discrimination, because 80% of the time someone says it, he/she is misusing the word. They can't discern discrimination from elitism/personal tastes.

            @nerthos Exactly! Me too. In factm that was the point of my lesson; it was about the difference between unfair discrimination and fair selection. Most students demonstrated a good understanding of the difference.
