    1. @retl Dude. Stop having skills when I don't. O.o

      1. @flaxx If you've got a few years and a pencil, you can get some skills. Which sounds much more aggressive than I meant it in my head, but it really is a learnable thing.

        1. @retl Or pen. Pen works too. I kinda prefer pen when I'm bored and don't care how it turns out

        2. @retl I didn't detect any aggressiveness in there. But yeah, if I put more time into it I'd get good. It's still kinda annoying when you're working on something for hours and it looks like crap, and someone comes along like, "yeah, I threw this together because I was bored." But I guess without those people we wouldn't have some of the awesome works of art that we have. So, uh, keep being awesome!

          1. @flaxx I understand the feeling, but it's because there are certain skills for me that are intuitive after practicing for a while, and some that take me a lot of effort to even get close to how I like, same as it was when I first started drawing. It's kinda like a neverending loop of working hard to get better, find another flaw, and then spend another set of months trying to fix that one before you find another one. I don't think the negative qualities of the image alone will make much sense so much by me explaining it so much as looking at it in comparison to the other works I do with the same software tool, MyPaint. Comparing my MyPaint stuff to say my Water Color stuff isn't going to highlight what I'm disregarding with the doodle much, either.

          2. @flaxx Another thing is "The longer you have to think about something, the more the flaws become apparent". But more importantly, remember that a lot of art isn't nearly as focused on execution so much as the topic and content itself. Much the same reason why I find something like http://www.furaffinity.net/view/4599305/ exponentially more appealing than something gruesome but well done like http://dh666.deviantart.com/art/Blood-61867880?q=boost%3Apopular%20in%3Atraditional%2Fpaintings%2Fmacabre%20blood&qo=1

            1. @retl Can't see that first image. :/ But I think I know what you mean. Also, one of the reasons I don't draw very well is probably because I don't have a drawing tablet/whatever they're called, so I have to use a mouse.

              1. @flaxx An acquaintance of mine is working on this. http://ploader.net/files/6356bba93e213296564a63e5b50bb87e.jpg They said it's slow work since they can't really hand-draw it, but I do think it's a lot more universe-fitting than most of my own fanart.

                1. @retl Wow, that's awesome. And yeah, some of the most awesome fan art doesn't really have the same style as the show, if you know what I mean. Hm... What's that program they're using? "Jasc Paint Pro Shop"? Do you know if it's good?

                    1. @flaxx I remember liking it when I used to have it, but I think it's pretty old. I can't say a lot about it now though, since I'm pretty sure it's Windows-only software, and my primary OS in the most recent years has been Ubuntu GNU/Linux.

                      1. @retl Ah, I see. I remember I got PhotoShop from my school for free, but after raging a bit too much at something, I broke the hard drive. So now I don't have it anymore. >.> Not that I ever used it, though, I was so used to GIMP that I never bothered to learn how to use PhotoShop. Kinda wish I had it now 'cause there's a lot of tutorials on how to drawn ponies with PS.

Tuesday, 10-May-11 15:53:53 UTC from web
                        1. @flaxx I like GIMP, but it's been giving my mouse/tablet drivers a bit of trouble lately. Most recently, I've been using MyPaint, but it's one of those software like openCanvas that is more or less designed for use with a tablet rather than being pretty good with whatever hardware is available.

Tuesday, 10-May-11 16:00:20 UTC from web
                          1. @retl Yeah, I like it too, but I think it would be more useful to get good at PhotoShop since it's way better (or so I've heard) and all the pros are using it. Hm... Not sure if I've ever tried MyPaint. Might check that out. Also, a dude told me of a program called Inkspace, so I'm thinking of trying that out, too.

Tuesday, 10-May-11 16:04:25 UTC from web
                            1. @flaxx Inkscape? Inkscape is really good for vector work if you can deal with the learning curve. It's also pretty good for matching up with the style of the show, too. I'm not very good at it, but I kinda like it when thinks start to work out. And yeah, if you want to do professional design work, it's a really good idea to at least be familiar with Photoshop in passing, even if you're not a master of it. For me, I just can't really work with it, even thought it was one of the first things I had ever done digital work using. There's also other tools like ArtWeaver, Paint.Net, ArtRage, and similar, buuuut a lot of those are things I outright can't use anymore unless I try to run them through Wine, and that's usually not worth the trouble.

Tuesday, 10-May-11 16:07:41 UTC from web
                              1. @retl Yeah, it's nice to not have to deal with pixels and stuff in Inkspace. I tried it a bit yesterday or something, but was too tired to figure out how it works. I have it on my computer, though, so I guess I'll try it out some more. Hm... I guess I could as a friend if he could give me PhotoShop. But that'd be illegal. :/ Never heard of ArtWeaver or ArtRage, but I believe I tried out Paint.Net sometime. Don't remember what I though about it, though.

                                1. @flaxx I think Macromedia? Shockwave? Whoever owns it now still offers 30 day free trials fully-featured of each version of their Flash IDE thing. That might be good for trying to do the MLPFiM type of look as well.

Tuesday, 10-May-11 16:23:02 UTC from web
                                  1. @retl this is a bit late, but Adobe owns Flash now. Photoshop too, and Illustrator and so on.

                          1. @theawesomepony Yeah, my economics course will end this summer, along with most other non-computer related subjects, so as long as I don't fail it completely, I'll get to do fun computer stuff for the next 2 years. @retl It might. I'll check it out. Thanks for letting me know. :D

But I finished elementary school (9 years) and now I'm at the end of my first year of [Swedish] gymnasiet [/Swedish]. And once I've finished my 3 years here, I'll probably go to a university or something.
