    1. @rarity Despite my opinions on Steam, Valve's high command are political geniuses.

      1. @nerthos they've really got "find interesting start up game companies and buy their ideas" down pat (see: Literally every Valve flagship besides Half-Life, not even joking)

        1. @rarity In my opinion their biggest success was not getting a profitable market, many have done that, but to create a monopoly and at the same time manage to have the general public love them, in part because of it.

          1. @nerthos Most consumers won't complain about a monopoly if they generally benefit, and will oftentimes actually hate companies for trying to make it less of a monopoly (see: Origin)

            1. @rarity Origin's issue is not so much about destroying the monopoly but about being annoying. Steam is excruciatingly intrusive but most users don't know about it nor care at all since they make a pretty good job of hiding it from the average Joe. Origin's functions are less hidden than Steam's.

              1. @nerthos everything is intrusive nowadays. Obviously you can take steps to avoid that but most people wouldn't care even if they knew

                1. @rarity Hence why I opt for pirated software except in rare cases. Same or better functionality, none of the spyware and bloatware.
