People don't care, they will accept backdoored phones. Our phones are already backdoored, it's called automatic updates. Same with Windows 10. You'll get a PC to put Linux on, but it will require EFI to boot, and that will be an opaque binary blob that authenticates your Internet to your ISP before you can get online.

@moonman That's what you get when you let people get complacent. At this point, you have to wait until it gets so bad it devolves into a civil war, society is kicked back a century or two, and it recovers over a few decades.
