I don't even like to use the term

because it's overused as mango, but by God there are real ones and we need to kill it with fire.-
@moonman Do you prefer 'Regressives'?
-
@dolus that's a stupid term too because it's very progressive if you assume that they're not liberals, they're radical socialists.
-
@moonman I dunno... The way they are trying to bring back segregation (racial and sexual) and police culture almost the same way the religious right used to, makes 'regressive' seem like a pretty fitting term.
-
@dolus I think that it too neatly avoids the fact that they aren't degenerating from liberalism, they're expressing a held ideology that is distinct from it. Just as an example, note the similar way that communists express disdain for "liberals" as how this group does. Not a coincidence.
-
@moonman Well of course not., communism is what they are ultimately striving for. Even if they do not call it such.
-
@moonman Well of course not, after all, communism is what they are ultimately striving for. Even if they do not call it such.
-
@moonman This is also why we cannot let them get away with calling themselves "liberals" anymore. Let them call themselves lefties, socialists or whatever else, but we have to take the term liberal back (and leave the libertarian handle to the anarcho capitalists).

-
@dolus like literally, they are following the playbook of a revolutionary far-left, not a "liberal" or "progressive"
-
@moonman Oh, I agree with you there. Fortunately, we have access to their playbook, thanks to the internet.
-
-
-
@moonman I prefer naming personally than using a label, but I don't indulge much in that type of conversation.
-
@hfaust Sometimes you have to attach a person to a broader movement. And I PREFER to not do it so much here, but I sometimes fall into it.
-
@moonman In all honesty, GNU Social had show how neutered conversations were in Twitter. Even if I don't participate in religion or political discussions, they are more interesting here because people are not afraid to express themselves. So maybe there's no necessity here to do that.
-
@hfaust 140 chars distorts discussion in unpredictable ways as well.
-
@moonman Aside from the technical restrain of the character limit, it also feels more neighbory here. I don't know if that makes sense. But on Twitter you get the sensation you are yelling in a park, and here you are talking to your neighbors while grilling meat.
-
@hfaust @moonman The fediverse has always had this feeling of approachability, like you can just hop on any conversation as if you knew the other person. Twitter lacks that, being commercial and focused on personal popularity.

@nerthos @hfaust theres also a scale issue, which would break if gnusocial got extremely popular. and some of the problems with twitter are shellshocked users not coping with that scale, being extremely unfriendly when someone unknoen jumps in a convo

-
@hfaust @moonman I should clarify I was never able to get into twitter, yet have been active here for almost 5 years.

@nerthos @moonman I was there since the beginning of the services until February of this year. I've seen a lot of apple.
-
@hfaust I just can't put up with a "social" network that isn't social. It's like going to a sports club with a ball and everyone is in their own thing and no one wants to play anything. There's no point. GNUsocial is like a club where you walk in and say "hey who wants to play ball" and 5 people will be in within the minute.

@moonman GNUsocial/statusnet is impossible to keep up with on a large scale.
Tuesday, 31-May-16 05:00:38 UTC from web-
@nerthos some aspects of gnusocial would help cope with that scale, but you'd have too many "megainstances" that would break that.
-
@moonman At one point here we'd get >60 people posting actively, and with an auto refresher it was literally impossible to read the posts on timeline.

@nerthos A couple weeks after I first started my service and a bunch of normal people were fleeing Twitter, it was amazing, there was so much traffic my server was crashing.

@hfaust this is absolutely the case. Twitter is flat, with everyone standign in the same room. gnu social is lumpy, segregated, via the follow system and to a lesser extent sandboxing/silencing which makes a more natural heat map with nodes, connections, based on actual shared interest, affinity.
-
-
-
@hfaust I've never had the ability to stay shut up for very long, always getting myself into trouble, people losing respect for me, etc. Just part of my personality. Being able to run a server and not have anybody shut me up undoubtedly was a factor in me migrating here.

@moonman You have my axe. And also my fork, my blowtorch, chains, hammer, and whatever else fits in your car's trunk, if it's for such a noble cause.
