  1. Falling into a yak-shaving morass... as part of my setting up a backup system exercise, I wanted to install software on Hal (my NAS). - I connect via its webUI and not to my surpise it tells me its OS (ADM) needs to be upgraded. So, I successfully update ADM. - Then I update some installed packages that also need te be updated, but two of them grumble that my ADM is too old. Wut. - Sure enough, another ADM update is waiting. This one also has release notes, which tell me its file structure has changed (so I'll need to study that all over again) and anyway you should make a backup of all data on the NAS. - OK, I wanted to install SpiderOak for that anyway, but I see no ASUSTOR package for it. The FAQ tells me they do not *directly* support NAS systems, but as long as you can mount the NAS on your computer (make it visible in the file system), SpiderOak will see it, and you can backup from there. 1. (ctd.) - Fine, so, I need to make a connection and mount that. Except, I've never done that from lappy Dennis, only from (currently defunct) Nikola. And I don't remember the magic formulae for that. - I *do* remember writing up notes about it (I even made a script), and I also remember I made a backup to Hal shortly before Nokila refused to boot or mount any USB3 device. So, I have to mount Hal... Ohno. Wait. - Ohyes, I can access Hal via its WebUI file manager and trace down my notes and scripts. I hope. - Now what was it I wanted to do??? # # #

      2. Hmm, looks like the backup of Nikola I made on Hal is incomplete: I have (most of?) the /home tree, but nothing from /etc or /usr. So it looks like I'll have to attempt to boot Nikola from a rescueCD againto get at my scripts and (SSH, maybe other) config files. I did find a link to an old thread here, from when I was setting all that up, which does refresh my memory at least partly (mostly the 'what' but not all of the 'how').

        1. Ha! Good news: while looking for a USB thumb with enough space to easily 'transport' important files from rescueCD-booted Nikola to Dennis, I found one which actually had (in a directory called 'rescue') my most important notes about setting up a connection to Hal (with SSH and sshfs). The notes and code snippets, together with the thread discussing some ideas should be enough to set up a connection from Dennis to Hal - and after that allow SpiderOakONE to make a backup of the backups on Hal. Once that's done, combine that with (manually started) Titanium Backup on the phone, followed by btsync on phone and Hal to 1) put Titanium's backup on Hal as well and 2) keep the KeePass database in sync across machines, too. That should cover most bases. I think. :) That's enough progress for today, I'll start executing this (and keeping new notes!) # Feeling # and # that I have more important notes than I thought!
