  1. @gameragodzilla @purplehippo I haven't read TOO much of Maiyannah's stuff (honestly I don't play that many video games these days...) but I like her attitude about the whole thing, I don't begrudge anybody trying to make a living off of reviewing video games, I just don't care for people that as you've said, are desperate for validation for their interests. It's a pathetic way to live.

    1. @moonman @purplehippo @gameragodzilla Anita really isn't in it to offer criticism.  Any criticism that happens is kind of a happy accident, whatever it's quality (and it's usually quite low).  What she's selling is basically a sort of brand.  Paying into Anita's scam is something I compare to the medieval Catholic tradition of indulgences - these people want to enjoy video games, but they don't want to lose social credibility and standing with their fellows.  So people like Anita sell them that assurance that they are one of the "good ones" that are in video games for "the right reasons" that they'll be "on the right side of history."

In short, what she's selling is like a social version of the placebo effect, because we've seen how much any actual ideology enters into these clashes - it usually only ever does as a weapon.  It's never a shield.  You're never good enough to be "pure".  There's always something what you did wrong.

      1. @purplehippo @moonman @gameragodzilla There's plenty of room for academic or social critique of video games, but the problem presented by that, is that kind of high-minded criticism, if it is to succeed, requires a deep knowledge of the media, and none of the people attempting these ventures have this.  All they have is agendas they want to push.  Most of them are either wittingly or unwittingly the arms of certain lobbies that feed the agendas they wish to succeed, and old media has quite a vandetta against video games, it always have.  Comparisons have been made between Anita Sarkeesian and Jack Thompson and while their ideologies are quite different, they share one thing in common: they are both beasts that certain lobbyist interests feed to attempt to control an industry they fear and do not understand.

      2. @maiyannah @purplehippo @gameragodzilla I legitimately think that she thinks she's doing meaningful, valuable work. This is roughly as delusional as to how PNAC people legitimately thought they were making the world better while enriching themselves off military contractor profits from invading Iraq, but it was honestly held.

        1. @moonman @purplehippo @gameragodzilla I am inclined to agree.  I do not honestly think Anita is intelligent enough to be a con woman of this kind of degree.  Someone else is pulling her strings in that regard.  Probably not directly, but lobbyists know which beasts to feed to get certain results.

          1. @purplehippo @moonman @gameragodzilla If you dig into Anita's history she has a long and storied past of kind of being the front woman to a variety of schemes and scams.  Such as that telemarketing ponzi scheme thing GG found out about and went nuts over some time back.

      3. @maiyannah This. Exactly this. Just yesterday I was thinking of how this whole politically correct fad is so similar to the religious fanaticism of the dark ages, just replace heretic with bigot.

        1. @nerthos Thankfully, the consequences are much less severe - usually.

          1. @maiyannah People just need to learn to be less sheepish and when told "you're so terrible for thinking differently!" just punch the accuser in the face instead of feeling bad.
