@why i can't even modern games, i'm over mobas and there isn't much else that interests me
DCSS is still OK though-
@camus @why wish I wouldn't have slacked off all these years on learning Japanese, I want to play a bunch of old pc88 games.

@delores @moonman @why @camus I've heard the language itself isn't much of a problem. It's the clusterpapaya of a writing system that will make you want to commit sudoku.
-
@dolus @delores @why @camus yeah the language is not hard to me at all, though i haven't practiced for years.
a couple months ago i was able to recall enough to order in a restaurant.-

@moonman @delores @why @camus When I saw that there are basically three different writing systems that are often used in tandem, it was enough to convince me to never try learning Japanese.
-
@dolus @moonman @why @camus nah its like
hiragana - basic Potato Knishes
katakana - even basic-er mango, pretty rare
kanji - literally just chinese
you're supposed to learn kanji though and at that point you should just learn chinese-
@delores @moonman @why @camus
> Just Chinese
You mean one character per word/idea? You have any idea how much memorization that entails?-
@dolus There is a certain pattern to the composition of kanji so generally you can have an idea what an unknown one is supposed to mean, but yeah. It's prehistoric-tier writing, basically making a tiny drawing per concept.

@nerthos A system like that is very compact relative to alphabetic writing systems, so it might have been useful for record keeping before computers were a thing.
-
@dolus Pretty much, but really difficult to learn and archaic nowadays.

@dolus @moonman @why @camus i was referring to you saying its 3 different writing systems. the japanese is 2 easy ones + some differences from chinese. yes, kanji is hard. no, it's not just memorization. that's a pretty ignorant statement. the characters are made up of different traits that entail what they are. they may have something in the corner to add part to the word, for example. thats like saying "english is a bunch of characters per word, thats a lot of memorization" when really its different combinations to create different words and you can get a base understanding and dissect words once you have that understanding
