@dogjaw as much as I'd love to install F-Droid on here, I'm sure there's no way. You're probably thinking of the Kindle Fire.

@ericxdu23 @dogjaw is it even possible to use it unregistered? Does Amazon still make it possible to use an untethered kindle?

@kzimmerman Yes. I've been using mine unregistered for years. I used it to read many .mobi format books from Project Gutenberg, any other DRM-free e-book vendors, and also decrypted ebooks my #wifey bought for us.

@ericxdu23 that's good, didn't know about it. I guess it makes e-ink #Kindles possible to own while leaving #Amazon in the dark

@kzimmermann Pretty much. I can't think of anything to worry about if you don't register it (an opt-in step) and keep it in "airplane mode". You can then load any appropriate unencrypted format on it via USB. Of course, Amazon has still exercised unjust power over you by keeping their software closed-source and making it hard to replace it... but that's a personal choice to evaluate.
