Not including the domain when mentioning someone on GS is like seven-digit dialing in North America. You never know who you're going to get.
It's less than an issue when replying, of course, unless there are username collisions.-

@takemangoakenji I think it was a mistake in hindsight. But I expect it was done that way for two reasons:
(1) Most people were on #Identi.ca at the time; and
(2) It was more familiar to people who had used #Twitter before they tried #StatusNet.
I'd like it if a future version of GS always displayed expanded webbies ( user @ domain ) instead of shortened names. -
