  1. @vloev @why @dtluna @dogjaw Are they? It's not very "liberal" to advocate for things limiting free speech and expressions (hate speech laws).

    1. @dolus @dogjaw @dtluna @vloev the people who advocate speech laws and grape like that ARE progressives. The people who want to keep the bill of rights but add free health care and open borders are liberal

      1. @why @vloev @dtluna @dogjaw I'm a liberal, and I don't want to be forced to pay for other peoples healthcare. As for open borders, the only people I'd give a free pass to are the chickas between the ages of 24 and 28.

        1. @dolus Is that the first time you call yourself a liberal?

          Tuesday, 24-Jan-17 17:44:56 UTC from social.heldscal.la
          1. @dtluna I'm a small 'L' Libertarian. That is a type center-right or center-left of liberal.

            Tuesday, 24-Jan-17 17:46:34 UTC from gs.smuglo.li
            1. @dolus ancaps (I identify as one), are also small "L" libertarians

              Tuesday, 24-Jan-17 17:48:04 UTC from social.heldscal.la
              1. @dtluna Ahh.. No. Ancaps would be big 'L'.

                Tuesday, 24-Jan-17 17:48:47 UTC from gs.smuglo.li
                1. @dolus why? They don't have to identify with the LP

                  Tuesday, 24-Jan-17 17:49:46 UTC from social.heldscal.la
                  1. @dtluna Ahh you mean in reference to the party. Personally, I don't consider any "libertarian" party as legitimate. So I use small and big "L" to contrast people pushing for small government with those who want none.

                    Tuesday, 24-Jan-17 17:52:27 UTC from gs.smuglo.li
                    1. @dolus that's not how most people use the term though.

                      Tuesday, 24-Jan-17 17:53:24 UTC from social.heldscal.la
                      1. @dtluna That's been changing recently. The Libertarian party has been on the decline in libertarian circles here in the states (this past election will accelerate that trend). So I, and a few others are re-purposing the terms.

                        Tuesday, 24-Jan-17 17:55:55 UTC from gs.smuglo.li
                        1. @dolus I just use already existing "minarchist" and "anarchist".

                          Tuesday, 24-Jan-17 17:56:56 UTC from social.heldscal.la
                          1. @dtluna Minarchist is too specific. That means the bare-minimum to technically have a functioning state. I'm not sure I'd go that far since I thing the federal government does need to have a hand in inter-state commerce.

                            Tuesday, 24-Jan-17 17:58:52 UTC from gs.smuglo.li
                            1. @dolus I see. I would say that you're liberal, but not libertarian then.

                              Tuesday, 24-Jan-17 18:12:45 UTC from social.heldscal.la
                              1. @dtluna Classical liberals still fall under the libertarian umbrella in American parlance.

                                Tuesday, 24-Jan-17 18:14:13 UTC from gs.smuglo.li
                                1. @dolus I kinda consider libertarian to be a more narrow category than a liberal

                                  Tuesday, 24-Jan-17 18:18:18 UTC from social.heldscal.la
                                  1. @dtluna @dolus liberal is "freedom, to a sensible point", libertarian is "freedom above all else"

or that's how I parse the terms. In my terms I'm a liberal, but in bizzaro politics land I'm a libertarian

                                    1. @eris @dolus that

        2. @dolus @why @vloev @dtluna @dogjaw Open borders make sense with countries that have high bilateral trade, are equally developed, and share a culture. Other than that, it's counterproductive.

        3. @dolus @vloev @dtluna @dogjaw keeping the bill of rights + the idea of freedom is not exclusive to left or right, you know

          Tuesday, 24-Jan-17 17:49:21 UTC from shitposter.club
          1. @why @vloev @dtluna @dogjaw Didn't say it was.

            Tuesday, 24-Jan-17 17:50:24 UTC from gs.smuglo.li
    2. @dolus Where I live "liberals" are center-right, advocating open market and small government and all that.

Tuesday, 24-Jan-17 17:39:47 UTC from web
      1. @nerthos Pretty much what I consider a liberal. You could also call them small 'L' libertarians.

        Tuesday, 24-Jan-17 17:45:35 UTC from gs.smuglo.li
        1. @dolus Yep. Basically "do whatever on your own, government only has to keep law and infrastructure going"

Tuesday, 24-Jan-17 17:45:06 UTC from web
      2. @nerthos @dolus In the US, "liberal" was seized by the Progressives over 100 years ago, who ranged from radical reformers to nutters to Marxists in disguise.
