  1. @dokidoki @takePotato Knishesakenji @why uh, i don't know much about GS history at all but it sounds really interesting given the amount of different names i see thrown around.

i remember hearing about statusnet a long time ago but wasn't interested back then. later on i saw some quality politics on quitter and decided it's something i'd rather stay away from, and all i know about pump.io is that it's connected with identi.ca (which i remember being a statusnet node?)

eternal february is when people started leaving Potato Knishester for GS, right?

    1. @roka @why @dokidoki @takegrapeakenji identi.ca was converted to a pump node before pump was really ready.

      1. @moonman @takemangoakenji @why @dokidoki @roka IMO that was a pretty dumb idea.

        1. @archaeme @takecherryakenji @why @dokidoki @roka It was done as a publicity stunt. It made sense from a marketing point of view - to launch the new software with a big ceremony, on a platform that already had an established userbase so thousands would get to try it and conversation would be abundant. However the mistake there was to suddenly (regardless of whether it was ready or not) move the floor beneath the feet of a huge network mostly composed of tech-oriented people, who tend to be picky with their software and like the stuff they're already using. Of course the result was that identi.ca was maimed, many people left and it never recovered.

          1. @nerthos @why @dokidoki @roka In hindsight it would have fared better if they kept using OStatus, but they didn't so the other nodes that used StatusNet weren't able to connect to them.

            1. @archaeme @why @dokidoki @roka Yeah, that was a really dumb decision. identi.ca was THE statusnet node, the main pillar of the federation. And suddenly it was self contained. Pretty sure a third of the users got separated from their usual crowds overnight.

              1. @nerthos @why @archaeme We're actually seeing a more gradual form of this with Mastodon now, except perhaps that some people miss Identi.ca and no one will miss Mastodon.

                1. @maiyannah @why @archaeme @roka @dokidoki Haha, yeah. Say what you want about identi.ca, it had a few issues like the community being really hard to join if you weren't in the loop regarding free software or one of the groups they had, but until the pump.io disaster it was widely regarded as successful and an example of properly applied effort into developing new features as the community needed them.
