  1. Also what on Earth is actually up with Japanese Masto.

I've just ended up blocking them because, well, simply put, all of their posts are in friggin Japanese.

So there's no point in following them. They don't seem to follow others on here. Just fav posts.

    It essentially becomes...spam.

Is there more to this that I'm missing here? Or...is it simply weird clashing of languages?

Cos I can't say I've experienced a bunch of Japanese people faving posts on twitter, for example. Only seems to happen here with Japanese Masto.

    1. @katiekats It's literally a social network for Japanese people. They don't bother writing in anything else because they see it as a local thing rather than an international site. They'll favourite posts that show up on their feed, but won't go out of their way to reach out to anyone who isn't within their e-borders. Remember it started with pixiv which is almost exclusively japanese, and the few users that aren't from there use the language anyway or don't write at all.

        Huh, makes sense.

My main point of whether it's worth blocking or not (individuals, not the actual thing) is whether they fav posts because of federation stuff as some do (In which case it's...just spam) or whether it's cos...they read it and understand English and actually want to fav it, they just don't -talk- in English.

        1. @katiekats An overwhelming portion of Japanese internet users know at least basic English, so they probably understand some or all of it. They won't engage you in a chat in most cases unless you talk to them in Japanese though.

Well I know no Japanese whatsoever, heh.

            Thanks for the explanation tho.

            1. @katiekats No problem. A lot of people seemed to not notice that as I know vanilla mastodon had a mass hysteria regarding jap-mast not bothering to federate past having the servers open to traffic nor adapting at all to the rules of other nodes back when it was created. Whoever made the first japanese networks saw the software for the software, and built a node to use as a standalone network rather than to integrate into the existing userbase.

Makes sense. Guess there ended up being confusion due to federation and, it being difficult to enforce rules on well...those speaking another language.

                1. @katiekats To be honest there's not much of a need for it as they're self-contained and don't really do anything weird.

I vaguely remember there being a thing about Pixix doing loli stuff, or something like that? So I can understand that much, of certain legalities (Like how HA has to be careful cos Canada based)

Beyond that tho I can't imagine there's much need, no.

                    1. @katiekats Oh, yeah, that was the source of some of the one-sided fighting. Someone on this side of the fediverse made an article on it, as the masto guys would freak out and accuse the jmasto nodes of distributing CP or whatever, and the jmasto people would not understand what was going on as they were only posting what's legal and socially acceptable in their country, so they thought the request was based on something else than local laws of certain western countries. Basically "but we already ban the illegal stuff, what are you asking?". Masto didn't bother to understand the difference between loli and CP either, laws nonwithstanding.

          2. @nerthos @mushi It's a good thing half the Mastodon instances have you on a blocklist for admin-encouraged free speech oppressive appleposting nazism.

            I don't think they're a very smart bunch.

            1. @cyberpotato The fact that they'd block us when their software is unable to federate with us in the first place shows how bright they are. It's like building bug screens on a house on the moon.

              1. @nerthos They even block Wrongthink and that doesn't federate with anything.
