  1. Phew, took me several hours to understand how font settings, namely freetype, infinality, lcd filtering, AA, hinting, settings in /etc/fonts/conf.d and ~/.Xresources work with each other.

    tl;dr infinality does a Fluffle Puff jobu for monospaced fonts – it tries to draw glyphs by adding more ‘meat’ to the bones, but one can’t put more meat on lowercase m. That leads to some letters, their stems, being thicker than that of other letters. The whole look of the font becomes like if a tornado went over it, tearing off chunk in one places and leaving at the others.

    1. Note, that Infinality’s fattening effect applies depending on whether freetype built with it or not, if you just disable it from /etc/conf.d/, fonts ain’t get thinner by themselves.
