@nutterguy: Seashells is a minigame used to determine order for the first race, and sometimes a tweaked version is played when getting a mystery-box powerup. But yes, you HAVE to collect Volleyballs in order to keep the timer from running out. And the shiny beachballs give powerups, but once you use the powerup, you pop the ball and you can't get it back until you find a new one.
