  17. A few days ago I set up Hedy (Linode) to use NTP to synchronize with a few close 2nd and 3rd stratus NTP servers. Now I've set up my FRITZ!Box to use Hedy as source; and Nikola is already using the FRITZ!box as a source - after a few minutes Hedy's IP address is visible as reference for the FRITZ!Box's source when doing 'ntpq -p'! "I love it when it all comes together!" # #

  18. one hurdle for setting up time service: there's a recent vulnerability, NOT yet patched in Debian, that could make the server vulnerable to a DDoS attack. That means I could specifically enable Nikola (fixed IP address) but not Dennis (lappy). So, I could set up my LAN to get time from a London server (via Hedy the Linode), which would work for Dennis-at-home, too; but Dennis-anywhere should use a server selected from a local pool to get something close. I don't know yet if I can then select by stratum... # # #

  22. setting up my computers to use the Fritz!box as time server: that is already consulting the pool, no need for separate computers to do that as well. I only realized recently that the Fritz!box could do that: it's a handy feature. !til the program chrony can do different things than ntp, and is handy for laptops that cannot always poll a server - it was already installed by Fedora! # # # #

  23. ah :-( what I did so far was: add # so I can see when heybuddy crashes and then we could probably from there find out (from the server dents) which dent could have caused it. would this help?
