  1. It is bonkers to me that people give so much authority to the catholic church. If they were doing the right thing the child diddling pieces of Fluffle Puff were in jail and excommunicated.

    • @nerthos Sounds great! I was not very informed or I forgot the news about that. I guess my avoidance of religious news is the culprit.

    • @nerthos Plus, the vast majority of said CSA cases happened in the 60s and 70s. At the same time hippies were taking 14 year olds to concerts and giving them drugs to sleep with them, Michel Focault (of marginality theory fame) was leading a political movement to remove age of consent laws in France, and universities worldwide taught that you should do LSD and pedophilia was actually a very good thing for the kid's development.

It was a plainly insane era, objectively the most predatory and abusive of the XX century except for maybe Weimar Germany.

    • @adiwan Yeah it was nice. They excommunicated like 900 priests between 2004 and 2014 when serious investigations took place.

Obviously there will always be incidents like with any crime (there are over 400k active priests plus a whole lot more clergy staff, nuns, monks etc) but the cover up policy is over. Now they try to do an internal investigation first and if they find anything, excommunicate and report to secular law, unless it's within the vatican, which as a sovereign state has the authority to trial.

  2. I learned recently that I have near identical political views to Daniel Tosh. If I said this fourteen years ago you guys would’ve dog piled me on Skype.

  3. Also I can verifiably say I was one of the pope’s first six thousand followers on Twitter, this should make me eligible to be a bishop

  4. I miss the old web in way. Everything nowadays is so filled with unnecessary JavaScript bloat and animations and endless scrolling and overlaying popups that it sucks out all the usefulness of the website while being laggy as it can be.

  5. There is nothing inherently funny about the new pope being from Chicago, so why did I start cracking up when I read it

          • Digging out tree stumps is hard. Stupid roots. I had to buy a new saw with large teeth to make it rip better through the very wet wood of the roots. The previous owner had cut off three trees and let the stumps behind some bushes and I created some of my own. I really want a greenhouse there some day and these idiots needed to go.

          • An almost fantastic level of unthought out this way today, like could anyone ever explain this to someone who can't figure this out on their own?

            • Got coworkers talking about how their doctors told them they have vitamin D deficiency. They complain it makes no sense because they're out in the sun all day. Except they wear long sleeves and pants and a sun hat, and I'm just sitting here thinking "You understand that only the backs of your hands and random odd angles of your face ever get any actual sun exposure though, right?"

                • I've disposed of my jalapeno plants. They were not in good health, floppy leaves and all-around yellowed and had a silvery layer (mildew?) on the leaves. Despite having flowers in bloom and some growing fruit I went to the decision to get rid of them in case they spread mildew to nearby plants.

                • Ooof. I'm exhausted after another D&D session being the DM. I had to reshuffle and rework my prepared stuff to make sense with all the content my players have skipped. This time I really tried not to hinder the players with stuff that makes only sense to only me at the time. I tried to avoid hidden mechanics. Anything that only makes sense when knowing all the machinations in the background. If it is not presented to the players or convincingly told to the players it robs them to make an informed decision and thus agency. On the other hand it makes me do more work before the start of the adventure and also between the sessions. Practically I threw out half of what I did months before.
