  1. @rarity That seems like a problem which resolves itself.

  2. @scoot because you're in the generation (probably the last generation) of users who was actually exposed to open networking.

  3. @snowlynx I think it'd need to contain some random elements in order to expose people to new things as well. Or people would just get stuck in their preassigned groups and never get out.

  4. But I'm not convinced there exists a way to make open model social networking appeal to people who've been raised in an environment in which they have absolute control over what they see in their feeds. Why /would/ you choose to expose yourself to foreign and potentially hostile points of view when dozens of pieces of software allow you to construct a nice neat worldview and hide in it?

  5. There's definitely a generational disconnect between groups of users. People who didn't grow up with facebook or who have deliberately avoided the "closed" social network model have generally less problems assimilating with the rest of the site than users who did.

  6. @rarity Only if you consider "Most likely to be selected by random number generator" a mark of superiority

  7. @redenchilada Personal on-login combined with force-following a cross section of the sites less awful users ala twitter is probably a solid compromise

  8. @redenchilada To be honest there's a strong case for banning all of the old regulars because they make public incredibly new-user hostile 90% of the time. The site is incredibly cliquey and I'm not really certain of how to overcome it.

  10. @redenchilada Let's back up here: What's the proposed end goal here?

Saturday, 13-Apr-13 22:20:50 UTC from web in context
  11. @redenchilada That's not really a compromise, that's "Let's balkanise the site into small groups of people that don't interact".

  27. As he spoke, Bast’s eyes grew paler, until they were the pure blue of a clear noontime sky. “I swear by all the salt in me: if you run counter to my desire, the remainder of your brief mortal span will be an orchestra of misery. I swear by stone and oak and elm: I’ll make a game of you. I’ll follow you unseen and smother any spark of joy you find. You’ll never know a woman’s touch, a breath of rest, a moment’s peace of mind.” Bast’s eyes were now the pale blue-white of lightning, his voice tight and fierce. “And I swear by the night sky and the ever-moving moon: if you lead my master to despair, I will slit you open and splash around like a child in a muddy puddle. I’ll string a fiddle with your guts and make you play it while I dance.”
