People telling an artist to stop using Apple products. RDN everybody.

@scoot I'd be using an iMac if I had money. Mostly because they're shiny but also just because OSX is such a nicer interface than Windows.
-
@scoot I never understood why they're so popular among artsy dudes. Any particular periferic or software makes them worth it?
-
@mrmattimation As soon as I got comfortable in OSX I started using it almost exclusively
-
@nerthos Artists are typically bad at keeping money around
-
@nerthos I know for music, Logic Pro is in the top 2 or 3 production softwares. And aside from the fancy resolution displays IIRC there a specialized programs for the OS
-
@redenchilada That genuinely made me laugh
-
@nerthos First and foremost, Adobe is just so much nicer with Apple (even if Apple does ass-backwards things and doesn't return the favor). Plus, Apple has a bunch of in-house software like Final Cut and Logic.
-
@nerthos Literally no unneeded baggage. It's clean and crisp and nicely designed, which I appreciate a whole bunch. This new Retina thing is very good for artists as well, I can work really closely and intricately and not lose clarity of the image. Also for whatever reason Photoshop loads much faster on OSX than on Windows for me
-
@scoot So basically aesthetics and display. Photoshop loads in about 4-6 seconds on my desktop, and like 8-10 on my netbook.
-
@mrmattimation What do those two programs do?
-
@nerthos There is no delay to Photoshop loading on my Mac. I click the button and it's open, I'm sure there are other good reasons (Adobe and Apple seem to be friends) but those are some of the reasons I like it
-
@nerthos Final Cut is a video editing and compositing software used in most professional studios. Ditto for Logic, except for music. They're both really nice to use.
-
@scoot It probably keeps a background process running with the basics of the adobe suite then. I think that can be done on windows too but I use the program a ouple times a year so it's not really worth it for me.
-
@nerthos I have no idea to be honest. As far as I'm concerned it just works.
-
@nerthos It's probably more likely that his load times are so fast because MacBooks come standard with an SSD now. It's something that doesn't excite me because now the drive space is smaller, but I guess if you keep an external around that really isn't a problem.
-
@scoot @mrmattimation Oh, BTW, I'm looking to buy a new graphic tablet. Any particular models that I should look for?
-
@nerthos I heard the Intuos is pretty good.
-
@mrmattimation Load times on that kind of program aren't affected that much by the disk drives.
-
@nerthos http://pny.lv/g28 It's pricey, but there are lower-end Intuos models for under 100 bucks as well.
-
@mrmattimation Seems too fancy for the use I'll give it
-
@nerthos Check out the Intuos Pen, then. http://pny.lv/g29
-
@nerthos I've had good experience with a Wacom Bamboo Splash. $80 for a simple no-frills tablet. There are probably some cheaper brands too.
-
@nerthos I've only ever used Wacom's entry-tier stuff like the Splash and had no issues. It's very basic but it works fine if you're not used to Cintiqs and such
-
@mrmattimation Is the cursor relative to the overall position of the pen on the tablet, or to the movement done with the pen? My biggest issue with tablets was always the fact that I can't rotate them around like I do with paper
-
@scoot I don't even know what a cintiqs is
-
@nerthos A Cintiq is the big screens you can draw onto
-
@scoot So basically a monitor built into the tablet?
-
@scoot Me want Cintiq.
-
@clayinthecarpet They're over £1000 here so they must be around $1700~
-
@nerthos It's more like a monitor that you can draw on with a tablet pen, they're pretty huge too.
-
@scoot Sounds too fancy to be practical
-
@scoot Yeah. I just said I wanted one. Not that I could afford one. XD
-
@nerthos I assure you that you would not say that if you used one
-
@clayinthecarpet Haha yeah, most artists /want/ one :)
-
@scoot Maybe. I just know drawing will never be worth £1000 for me.
-
@nerthos I'm in the same boat. I have historically made little to no money on any drawing I've ever made. I chalk the whole art form up to a complete loss that I just do from the heart because I enjoy it. *shrugs*
-
@nerthos Well no, I see no reason to purchase one nor do I advocate it. I was saying unless you're used to those, a good little tablet like the Splash should be fine
-
@clayinthecarpet I never made money from drawings nor I intend to. I like to do other more profitable stuff for money. Plus I couldn't stand drawing constantly.
-
@nerthos Both. You can change it in the settings.
-
@mrmattimation Cool.
