Apparently Facebook bought Oculus Rift. Odd.

@xeleanorxrigbyx And Disney bought Maker Studios!
-
@mrmattimation Wow. Welp, there goes the neighborhood.
-
@xeleanorxrigbyx I'm slightly curious as to what Disney could possibly want with a company that employs UkinoJoe.
-
@mrmattimation Just looked that guy up. That was interesting.
-
@xeleanorxrigbyx Gaming is dead forever
-
@ceruleanspark I don't get the grab. Is FB just trying to stay relevant at this point?
-
@xeleanorxrigbyx "Everybody hates us. What should we do?" "Buy a company everyone loves! That's sure to improve our image"
-
@ceruleanspark RIP Oculus. Perhaps Valve will step up.
-
@xeleanorxrigbyx I heard that disney bought pewdiepie... that's eqaully weird
-
@scootaloo123 Amongst a ton of others as @mrmattimation mentioned. It's a weird sort of power grab across the board. Though Disney buying videos isn't as weird as a stumbling social media site buying a promising gaming device.
-
@scootaloo123 They didn't buy PewDiePie directly, only an idiot would do that. They bought Maker Studios, the company he's probably employed with.
-
@xeleanorxrigbyx In 2075
-
@ceruleanspark Ha, no kidding. Apparently Sony is working on some VR stuff though.
-
@xeleanorxrigbyx So it's going to be bad.
-
@mrmattimation Which part?
-
@mrmattimation wait that was actually sort of true. But the way you put it makes more sense then buying a youtuber.
-
@xeleanorxrigbyx The part where Sony works on anything that isn't Blu-Ray players.
-
@mrmattimation Hey, the Playstation line has been pretty solid.
-
@xeleanorxrigbyx Morpheus looks good, and sony does have experience in the wearables market, but I really doubt it's going to come in at a price a human being would consider "affordable". That said, maybe someone else will just knock off their device and sell it cheaper.
-
@xeleanorxrigbyx PSX and PS2.
-
@mrmattimation I have no issues with the PS3 or PS4.
-
@xeleanorxrigbyx The PS3 is a glorified Blu-Ray player and the PS4 is pointless because now it's exactly the same as the competition.
-
@ceruleanspark I feel like if I funded part of the Oculus kickstarter, I'd be insanely upset. You gave this small business money to make something that they believed in that you thought sounded good and they turned around and sold out for $2B to Facebook. What was even the point of the freaking kickstarter.
-
@xeleanorxrigbyx Yay Valve I hope they actually can count to 3
-
@mrmattimation Someone has to compete with Microsoft. And I think the PS is doing a fine job of that. There are certain games that only pull 720p on the Xbone but 1080p on the 4. Of course neither one is a PC, but they do what they need to and at least the 4 looks good doing it.
-
@vt3c Yeah, I think it's a solid contender. Of the two systems that I own, the 360 is sitting off to the side and the 3 is still kicking. I'd transition everything over to PS3 format, but that takes money. Also I'd lose Forza 4.
-
@xeleanorxrigbyx To get the money to build enough of a project to be attractive to a large corporate buyout. To be fair to them though, Occulus weren't exactly going anywhere fast.
-
@ceruleanspark I don't know, I'd heard a lot of excited buzz about it. Seems like they squashed any buzz they had.
-
@xeleanorxrigbyx They had huge amounts of buzz, but at the rate of progress they were working at, they were never going to get a best of breed VR device into the hands of consumers before one of the big players consumed the market. The only sensible thing to do, if you wanted a rift, was to buy a dev unit
-
@ceruleanspark And from what I could tell, there were lots of preorders for the DK2. The feedback seemed to be quite positive for what they'd done.
-
@xeleanorxrigbyx The original Kickstarter for the rift ended in /2012/
-
@ceruleanspark And we're still waiting for a public product.
-
@xeleanorxrigbyx Exactly. They've made and sold a devkit, and they're making and selling /another/ devkit, and they still don't have a timeline for a consumer launch.That's the kind of developmental murdockion you can only really afford to do if you're google (or, y'know, owned by facebook). Personally, I'd have gone with releasing a slightly upgraded version of the devkit to consumers (branded as a retail product) before starting to mess about with a second generation product.
-
@ceruleanspark I still think they could have found a company with a better image. Facebook doesn't exactly have a good public image. Maybe if they paired with Valve or something.
-
@xeleanorxrigbyx Valve is allegedly developing a competing product. They're just not gonna be interested
-
@ceruleanspark Well, it will be exciting to see where technology winds up regardless. I just don't trust Facebook any farther than I can throw it.
-
@xeleanorxrigbyx wow this conversation is going on a long time
-
@scootaloo123 Sometimes that seems to happen here. :)
-
@vt3c Ha, then Origin steps forward as the mighty champion! (I think I threw up in my mouth a little bit after typing that...)
-
@xeleanorxrigbyx yay I realized that
