Hey... I'm Fluttershy. I saw this site and made an account. I hope you don't mind...

@snowcone ... if that were possible it'd be a fantastic idea.

@snowcone Why would they need snow melting mechanisms. If it's snowed, there's not enough sunlight to charge the array anyway

@cinnamonswirl They're not smart

@nerthos Dealing with damage to the road surface is a more pressing issue though. A pothole in a solar panel is a bigger deal than asphalt

@cinnamonswirl They believe the acrylic/tempered glass surface is able to survive wheels, stones and plows indefinitely. If they had thought this through, they would have realized it is far more viable to install the same type of panel on the roofs of houses. On there, the only type of damage they'd recieve would be hail and bird excrement, sometimes a cat scratch, so the panels would be practically indestructible under normal conditions.

@nerthos @cinnamonswirl @snowcone honestly I could see it being a viable idea if they didn't use tempered glass and just put the solar charging panels somewhere else, like off to the side of the road where they won't be repeatedly put under so much pressure.

@thewaifutyphoon The tempered glass is a good idea, and gives the usually fragile panels an amazing lifespan, you just can't put them as roads. Another issue is /where/ they plan on getting the resources required to build such a thing. Assuming this would replace domestic power lines, the issue of copper is solved by using the then-obsolete wiring network as a source, but what about the other materials? Asteroid mining?
Monday, 16-Jun-14 19:42:16 UTC from web-
@nerthos yeah I just meant using the glass for the panels and using asphalt as we already do

@cinnamonswirl I assume it'd be something along the lines of if the array is covered (with snow), the melters would kick on

@snowcone They could do that. I was just mentioning an alternative to putting the panels directly on the road
Monday, 16-Jun-14 19:41:29 UTC from web -
@spint you mean like the one that was just being mentioned
Monday, 16-Jun-14 19:41:42 UTC from web -
@snowcone http://trends.directindustry.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Ivanpah.jpg they /did/ do that.
Monday, 16-Jun-14 19:41:55 UTC from web -
@spint you could read the arguments against it that people /just/ mentioned and see why it's not a good idea
Monday, 16-Jun-14 19:42:20 UTC from web -
@spint In the Mojave someplace, yes
Monday, 16-Jun-14 19:43:17 UTC from web-
@cinnamonswirl Funny, then why can't I find it in Fallout New Vegas? #pointproven #owned #getgood
Monday, 16-Jun-14 19:43:56 UTC from web-
@thewaifutyphoon http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/HELIOS_One I would suggest it's because you're a scrub
Monday, 16-Jun-14 19:44:26 UTC from web-
@cinnamonswirl That is exactly what I thought about when you said Mojave.
Monday, 16-Jun-14 19:45:02 UTC from web -
@cinnamonswirl HAHA I literally just did that like two days ago and already forgot. Oops.

@spint You haven't given me reason not to.

@spint Still true.
Monday, 16-Jun-14 19:45:08 UTC from web -
@spint not what I said, but okay
