@rarity hungry better win
-
@rarity im just not a fan of armada xD
-
@pianissima I don't follow the scene enough to have favorites lel. I'm much more a traditional FG player and fan
-
@rarity ahh. well the socal scene is pretty fantastic, so its really fun to play aginst them down here. So i follow it pretty thoroughly xDD
-
@pianissima I'm a little jealous
-
@rarity yeah, the los angeles scene is pretty great for pro gaming. I live like 20 minutes away from where they host LCS xDD and about 10 minutes from the best smash arcade in socal
-
@pianissima Super Arcade?
-
@rarity yeah. its just down the street from me. you might see me on levelup in the background xDD not today though. im sick still. eventually ill get back to being good enough to play feature matches
-
@pianissima god dammit definitely jealous now. I watch WNF every Wednesday (although NLBC and East Cost is better)
-
@rarity east and west coast have really different playstyles. I never was in to fighting games so I dont bother with wnf. Too many people have too many years of experience over me, but ive been with smash since n64, so I have the knowledge and history to compete xD
-
@pianissima well EC has basically no Smash community so WC and the midwest definitely win in that game
-
@pianissima Are there legitimately a west coast vs east coast playstyles for Smash Bros? That's the silliest thing I've ever heard.
-
@northernnarwhal there are. east coast is younger in the community and focuses mainley on consistency, shield pressure, and patient play, whereas west coast has a longer run in the community and is deeper in combos, techs, and edge guarding
-
@rarity EC is small, but its still there. there are some really talented players in EC
-
@northernnarwhal EC doesn't have Smash. In fighting games like Street Fighter though, there are totally different playstyles, just based on the type of people they play with. In SF, EC is a lot more passionate and random, with a lot more "reads" and predictions. WC is more technical and calculating, and are very good with reactions. Of course that's just generalization of the top players from either coast, there are all swords everywhere
-
@pianissima It's hilarious how seriously these nerds take Smash Bros, I just button mash when I play.
-
@rarity yeah, by playstyles i mean in the top 5% of players xD
-
@northernnarwhal a lot of people do, but there is an insane amount of tech and hurtbox detection in the game that makes it suitable for competitive and casual. its why I like it so much
-
@pianissima Competitive Smash Bros players make me cringe.
-
@northernnarwhal why so?its not too different of a competitive community than many
-
@pianissima I mean to be fair most competitive SSB players are kind of awkward
-
@pianissima Probably because they take Smash Bros so seriously it's kind of sad, and just generally because, to be blunt, a lot of the players are kind of assholes.
-
@rarity most competitive video game players are awkward period xDD I am no exception lol
-
@northernnarwhal there are assholes everywhere, in every community. And no one has much right to judge people based on what they put time into. A lot of people probably think the same thing about whatever it is you do. They are good at something, are part of a community, many are part of a team, and they are having fun, and they aren't hurting anyone.
-
@pianissima There are more assholes per capita in the competitive Smash community than others I've encountered. And it's not that I'm judging them, more of taking pity really. It's kind of cute how they think it's so sacrilegious to play Brawl, on a map other than final destination, with items on.
-
@northernnarwhal the reason they dont play brawl isnt because it's 'sacrilegious' its because they removed a lot of the awesome techniques usable in melee. the reason they only play on 7 maps and use no items is the same reason. They want a game with no RNG, just skill to determine who wins. Project M is brawl with additional Melee physics, and it is great in the comp community. On the higher per capita, I would disagree, on that. Though there are really nice communities, smash is a pretty average one when it comes to running across mean people. if you aren't nice to them, why would they be nice to you?
-
@pianissima Not at all, it's an elitist and hostile community that's quick to belligerently assault other members, with no constructive intention. Project M isn't even finished and is really just feels like a desperate attempt for whiny and clingy fans of Melee who couldn't deal with Brawl. If anything, Brawl felt like a much more polished game, and I put much more time into it. Although I also think it's sort of silly that they're very specific about how you play, and if they don't like a certain mechanic or can't compensate for it it's considered cheating. And have ever been to a Smash tournament? It's not even a question of being nice to them, they're incredibly snide and close minded and think they're better than everyone for playing a children's game.
-
@northernnarwhal I have been to smash tourneys. But ive never had a bad experience with any of them. maybe you just have had some really bad tourney or community experiences, but I have not. Ive met a few people who were hotheads, but that's it. And project M isn't complete, that much is known. I agree that brawl is a more polished game, you are right there. But that doesn't change the fact that it still removed many features of melee that made the gameplay extremely attractive to competitive communities. It was made by fans of both games trying to bring the tech of melee into the smooth playstyle and better programming of brawl. and you really do sound very hypocritical in that you are so close minded about them and then call them close minded and insult them directly.
-
@pianissima I'm not close minded, I think Smash Bros is a fantastic game series, and I've given tourneys a chance. But even if you just listen to some of these hardcore Smash players speak, it's incredibly cringe inducing. One particular fellow was this guy over 6' and well over 200 lbs, with the thickest beard I've ever seen, who commented on "the incongruous lack of wave dashing and l canceling" and proceeded to call me and my friend things that would get censored out on this site. That's not the only time too, just generally playing with these people, they're really hostile even among some of the more seasoned players. If you're less experienced like me you're a filthy casual and a disgrace to their "smash establishment" and if you're someone like my friend who brought me to the tournament who's pretty good you're "a tryhard nerd with no life". They're just generally really awful people taking a children's game waaaaaay too seriously for their own good.
-
@northernnarwhal yeahhh I think that's a local thing for you. here, at least, there are always people willing to help out new people get the competitive techniques into their game. Also, i think it is really low to use someones appearance as a way to further a negative point. and you keep referencing it as taking a children's game way too seriously. This is not a game made exclusively for children. Its made for everyone. Its a combat game, not a point and click adventure, just because its characters are from the Nintendo universe, means nothing really. There are always arguments against esports as taking games wayyyy tooo seriouslyyyyy, in the same light some people take baseball, soccer, football, golf, tennis, whatever way too seriously too
-
@pianissima There's a difference between taking something seriously and something way too seriously though. They don't know where to draw the line. And I don't think it's a low point at all to use appearance, the guy had a complete disregard for self respect and hygiene, I can't be blamed for noticing that. And it's mot made exclusively for children but it is child friendly, therefore a children's game (not that there's anything wrong with playing a children's game, mind you). And it might be more local, but Smash fans I've met online are generally no better, I haven't met a hardcore Smash player online or offline that I've liked or at least not been annoyed by. The reason Smash will never be taken seriously as an esport is because of its awful community, not because it's an esport.
-
@northernnarwhal >disregard
>over 6' and well over 200lbs
>I'm 5'8" and 260lbs
>mfw -
@thewaifutyphoon Do you at least shower regularly?
-
@northernnarwhal Yes but you never mentioned that, you just said he was tall and weighed a decent amount and had a beard.
-
@thewaifutyphoon His face was moving even when he stopped talking ;~;
-
@northernnarwhal still don't see how weight is something to judge a person though.
-
@northernnarwhal never use the internet as a source for genuine interaction. anyone can be a jerk behind a keyboard. 90% of interactions i have in games online or in game communities online aren't positive, but that's entirely different from real life interactions in the community at my local places etc. Since you are already opinionated so heavily toward the smash community, of course the people in it will 'annoy you' On the note of taking way too seriously. there is a distinction between child friendly and childrens game. If by children's game you mean children friendly, then it is just using a negatively connotative word that confuses your intent. it already is taken seriously as an esport, and i'm sorry to hear about your bad experience with your smash community, but, like i said, its not the experience I've had in many places in the community in california and adjacent states.
-
@thewaifutyphoon Well, I'm not going to just judge negatively based on weight (I have some pretty heavy friends) but you when you see someone doesn't have any self decency whatsoever. And I'm not saying being fat = being indecent, but I think just letting hair grow anywhere and everywhere without keeping control of it, not showering, and having uncontrollable eating habits aren't what I would consider positive traits.
-
@northernnarwhal of course they're not positive traits but for all you know, that weight could be because of an issue he can't control, like thyroids that don't function properly. But considering that I have at least one and sometimes two of those things you mentioned, it's not great when you say things like that.
-
@pianissima Except for the part where I've also had real life interactions and they were awful. And it's more than that one example, that one just stuck in my mind. Also, I never said I was heavily for or against the community. And it doesn't even matter, it's the way these people act that annoys me. No one outside of Smash players considers Smash a serious esport too. With that in mind, again, nothings wrong with it being a children's game. I don't see why you're getting so defensive about it. All I'm saying is that for a game partially marketed to children, they don't know where to draw the line in how seriously they take it as full grown adults. And it's not just me who's had a bad experience, people I know have all also been treated awfully by the Smash community,
-
@northernnarwhal I am defensive about it because I enjoy the tournaments, I know a lot of the professional players, I used to be one myself, and the fact that smash is not only included, but featured in so many national events such as evo (going on right now) would say that smash is considered an esport by many more. Oh also the nintendo e3 conference, that would also say that more people take it seriously than jsut the community. The fact that you are openly attacking the smash community will of course make me try to defend it. If i were to, right now, talk about all the bad experiences Ive had with the brony community, and began attacking it, who on this site wouldn't defend it, being part of that community.
-
@thewaifutyphoon Well, I have a friend born to two very overweight parents and has a low metabolism, so even when he works really hard he has a really high base weight. But he doesn't use that as an excuse and still trims his beard to look orderly, showers, and always wear clean clothes. Although I'm sorry I offended you, I really didn't mean to and I guess was speaking sporadically. I hope this doesn't put a spoke between us.
-
@pianissima a lot of people wouldn't defend it actually. Even bronies (not everyone here is one) aren't fond of bronies.
-
@northernnarwhal it doesn't but I just wanted to make sure you knew that there are things things that can cause weight that you can't control.
-
@thewaifutyphoon yeah, i know. I'm not talking about diehards exclusively, im talking about MLP as a whole, the community
-
@pianissima I'm "attacking" (as you so eloquently put it) the community based on numerous personal experiences myself and people I know have had. And you can't just assume everyone at Nintendo's conference is there because they're really into Smash, they could be awaiting the new Mario or Zelda just as much. And EVO, really? That's basically just a glorified larger tournament and basically everyone there is already a hardcore Smash fan anyway, even if it's not their game of choice. Also, go ahead and talk about bad experienced with the brony community, I'm not even a brony. I've at least met one person who is a brony who isn't completely belligerent and rude.
-
@northernnarwhal YOUR FARTS SMELL BAD PLEASE GIVE ME CRACKERS
-
@thewaifutyphoon I know, I think what I was trying to illustrate afterwards was that the guy in question wasn't just fat, he was very disorderly.
-
@thewaifutyphoon You're not a parrot, no crackers for you
-
@northernnarwhal Can I have some sugar instead
-
@northernnarwhal im not talking about the audience at the e3 conference. im talking about nintendo bringing the super smash brothers star players and casters to play the new smash. Evo is a very large tournament that brings the proffessionals of the games together to compete. how does that not sound like an esport >.> I think you live in a really REALLY bad place if you've appearantly only met one nice fan of MLP and 0 nice SSB players. wither that or you just have really bad luck with where you decide to go for those interactions
-
@pianissima "Oh also the nintendo e3 conference, that would also say that more people take it seriously than jsut the community"
"im not talking about the audience at the e3 conference"
EVO does bring many players together, but from what I've seen Smash is looked down upon outside of that core community, whereas something like, say, Street Fighter people are more indifferent to. Both are esports, but Smash won't be respectfully treated as an esport because of its community. And I said at least 1 fan of MLP, not 1 fan of MLP. You're again putting words in my mouth. Although MLP's community is pretty hit and miss depending on where you go and who you talk to, but that's better than nothing. -
@northernnarwhal not audience, not reporters, OH THE COMPANY! Thats who i was referencing. Yeah, mlp community has some pretty big diehards out there, but to each their own ^w^ and smash is already an esport internationally, so saying that it never will be a respected esport is a little misled as it is already one
-
@pianissima I never said it wasn't, but it can hardly be taken seriously as one.
-
