I don't see why English is a required class past the 9th grade. By that point I think we're fluent.

@zeldatra if the general population is anything to go by, that's when people stop learning. You do learn more past then, most people just choose not to.

@zeldatra The class is supposed to be there to teach the structure of the language, not how to use it. You're supposed to learn that on your own.

@renovatedkitchen That's the thing, here immigrants get separated into their own English class suited to their level of fluency. So why make everyone who can already speak English well take it?

@zeldatra Even beside the point, though, English class isn't teaching you the language itself past 9th or 10th grade. After that they're teaching you how to understand deeper meanings in literature and other stuff like that.

@zeldatra @redenchilada I'm in 10th grade. We are STILL working with where was/were is supposed to be. I mean, seriously - We learned that 5 years ago!

@redenchilada I had two who understood, but weren't able to teach anything due to the stupidly low level of the class.

@woona that depends on the author or outlet. They're not trying to just show you that for the sake of showing you it, they're trying to show you it so you can learn how to properly analyze and write creatively, something that most people can't do.

@redenchilada Yet anothr reason as to why I don't like the way school works... In a class of 12 students, 3 students are way ahead of the class, and not learning to their full potential, 5 students follow the pace of the class, and 4 are way behind, not understanding a thing.

@derpyshy My mother is a physics teacher. She has a class of 39. 20 of them are waaaay behind.

@mushi Here the classes are of about 35 people, since law makes you go to school until 18.

@nerthos Exactly. That's because they teach them something, some of them get it, some don't, but they just move on to the next topic either way.

@woona They should do classes of 16-20 people for the kids who can keep up, and then classes of 30 for the rejects.

@chibiterasu also, all the labeling of kids as lower grade and not giving them support. Most kids just need a good kick of motivation. They should have classes to find that motivation

@woona I mean like an actual class. Like math or biology.

@chibiterasu well, I never had motivation. I just wanted to live a simple life till I fizzle away. Now that I have reason to live and a goal that I know is achievable, im doing everything myself to get myself up to that level
