      1. @pony That said, Tara Strong is publically mad. So someone dun goofed big time.

        1. @ceruleanspark yup. And she says she's afraid to go to future cons so that sucks. Maybe if they pay the actors in advance..

          1. @pony According to various other people who've come out the woodwork, who claim to have worked at other cons, normally you pay a deposit, then you pay after the fact for "work done". (For instance, whatever your owed percentage is on signed stuff). I don't know where that leaves you on comped rooms/flights etc. I don't think they'll stop doing appearences, as they all seem to know who the blame lies with, but they might start investigating who they sign up with more intensely, but that shouldn't pose an issue for people who /are/ operating above board.

            1. @ceruleanspark so that's how it works.. I've heard that the Crystal Mountain Ponycon is well planned and has multiple contingency plans so as long as the VAs etc. don't get turned off by the idea of coming to the "Mormon capital" of the world we should be just fine. We do have nice snow here and the people are hospitable.

              1. @pony The general consensus amongst the same "Con people" I mentioned before is that LP got carried away with signing too many guests for a first year con, assuming that more guests == more revenue, when apparently it actually plateaus after a certain number. Of course, not only are the credentials of the people offering this information nebulous and unobtainable, it's based on an assumption about an assumption, so treat with skepticism.

                1. @ceruleanspark This is better info that I'll be getting anywhere else most likely. Duely noted. I kind of want to get involved in helping organize a con once I'm no longer a slave to the educational system.

        2. @ceruleanspark Although I imagine cons with an established reputation won't have any problems. I'm mostly concerned about my local con.

        3. @ceruleanspark souns like news. Wonder if EQD will cover what happened, or if they'll be too busy posting fanwork

Tuesday, 26-Feb-13 09:23:59 UTC from web
          1. @crusader8 They've commented on twitter, but I suspect they're too terrified of being sued or losing out on potential future advertising to cover it on the site. If they slam these people, other con organisers might think twice about offering EQD people guest passes, etc for fear that, if something goes wrong, they'll get the same treatment.

Tuesday, 26-Feb-13 09:26:24 UTC from StatusNet Desktop
            1. @ceruleanspark so EQD will be looking out for themselves... as is to be expected.

Tuesday, 26-Feb-13 09:27:29 UTC from web
            2. @ceruleanspark they /should/ have to own up to being irresponsible of course. this shouldn't be anything to fear as long as the organizers are responsible of course

Tuesday, 26-Feb-13 09:29:01 UTC from web
            3. @ceruleanspark I think they'd be more afraid of revealing the brony fandom in a bad light than to scare off other cons from wanting to use EQD's ad space.

Tuesday, 26-Feb-13 09:29:06 UTC from web
              1. @crusader8 this seems likely to me.

                1. @pony to present the obvious humourously, EQD has a gigantic hard-on for championing the face of the fandom, and deciding what will be popular and well-known etc within said fandom. It's the only logical explanation for being nazis on fic submission quality, but allowing the site to be rather nsfw and letting subpar comics and music get the front page. Doing a big story about how bronies are just as petty as the rest of them would be a good story to show they're actually journalists, but could stain their self-perceived reputation.

Tuesday, 26-Feb-13 09:33:15 UTC from web
                  1. @crusader8 yup. I mean.. I guess it depends on how motivated as journalists they are vs. how self-important they perceive the fandom. xD

                      1. @ceruleanspark I bet one of them may feel bad sometimes but not know why. Like, every time they decide to regurgitate fanwork instead of go hunting for news on new product or opinions from the show's makers, one of the EQD probably gets a tightness in his chest that he can't explain, and his left eye sheds a few tears that earns questions from his peers.

Tuesday, 26-Feb-13 09:42:14 UTC from web
                        1. @crusader8 I think the biggest problem with expecting them to show journalistic integrity is that there isn't really all that much journalism for them to do. Their interface with hasbro consists entirely of "Getting press releases", and even if they had the pull to talk to the VA's, they're NDA'd to hell and back to prevent the disclosure of anything of value. They're admirably commited to staying the hell out of fandom drama, so they can't do that. All they can do is interview people with major fandom projects on occasion and attend cons. The fanstuff posts are necessary to fill the void bought on by the environment they work in.

                          1. @ceruleanspark I agree with you so much on this - can I agree twice on the same subject matter? can people do that? agree twice? dunno.

                          2. @ceruleanspark true. Maybe with the first hand experience they got from Unicon though, they'll be motivated to share details. I'm sure that fans will be asking.

Tuesday, 26-Feb-13 09:53:50 UTC from web
                            1. @pony isnt unicon one of the bigger ones? didnt it get lots of hype and press from things like EQD? That'd be like a game magazine predicting the first Two Worlds game to be the best rpg of all time

Tuesday, 26-Feb-13 09:55:36 UTC from web
                              1. @crusader8 I think it did get plenty of advertisement from EQD, but I didn't follow too closely so I'm not sure. I thought this was only Unicon's first year. Assuming that's the case, it was big for a first year con.

Tuesday, 26-Feb-13 09:57:32 UTC from web
                                1. @pony @crusader8 I think the hype was generated by offering comped tickets and rooms in exchange for coverage. Which is pretty standard practise across the board, whether it's a hardware review unit, or early access to a game or movie, trading access for coverage is pretty normal.

Tuesday, 26-Feb-13 10:03:34 UTC from StatusNet Desktop
                            2. @pony I suspect they'll probably play up the "Fandom came through and paid some peoples bills for them" angle, but, as is their remit, probably won't draw too much attention to the catastrophic failure the made the donations necessary in the first place.

Tuesday, 26-Feb-13 09:55:36 UTC from StatusNet Desktop
                              1. @ceruleanspark right now we're ironically being more journalistic than them - you found a reasonably reliable source of information conveying news of a recent event, then are using your journalistic skills to interpret and relate the information to us

Tuesday, 26-Feb-13 09:57:07 UTC from web
                              2. @ceruleanspark I'm hoping that however it gets reported it serves to inform other con organizers and prevent the same mistakes from happening. I'll be disappointed if they just dismiss it like it's nopony's fault. :P

Tuesday, 26-Feb-13 10:03:08 UTC from web
                                1. @pony I think DHN is covering it properly. Certainly their reporters tumblr is covering the "I'm broke and stuck in goddamn Vegas" angle.

Tuesday, 26-Feb-13 10:04:04 UTC from StatusNet Desktop
                                  1. @ceruleanspark that's sad but useful news. DHN has grown on me the last few months.

                    2. @pony I feel so bad giving them a hard time, but they haven't shown any journalistic integrity. I want them to, I wait for one of them to goof up and accidentally do the right thing as that is bound to happen once in a while, but these guys are just professionals at unprofessional-ism. Better yet, they are definitely professional at something, and that something is unknown to us.

                      1. @crusader8 heh. I find it a bit funny I guess since, if I were in their position, I know I wouldn't care much or at all about actual journalism, but instead about just enjoying the show and the good parts of the fandom (which they seem to do). xD
