  1. I just found out there will no more skyrim DLC's . Which means I can probably pick up the GOTY edition from steam rather soon, Although my guess would be July

    1. @critialcloudkicker Why is Steam so popular?

Thursday, 18-Apr-13 10:59:17 UTC from web
      1. @pony Marketing. People will overlook anything if you stick a nice figurehead on it and offer them a few sales every year.

        1. @ceruleanspark this is what I thought.

          1. @pony Plus there's the self sustaining "we're pretending to do it ironically but secretly believe it" PC master race circlejerk, which lets people feel like they're part of a club

            1. @ceruleanspark I do not think the PC master race needs any incentive from Steam to feel superior over dirty console peasants. Surely some can and will make that claim though.

            2. @ceruleanspark Clubs are important. #

              1. @pony I don't think they club the type of seals that prey on penguins

                1. @ceruleanspark new strategy then I guess http://www.teetshirts.com/images/uploads/beaverTHUMB.jpg

        2. @ceruleanspark @pony I agree with that too... In fact Steam is using tiered unlocks for pre-orders. I would have no problem throwing the person who introduced that into steam to the cockatrices

      2. @pony Because it is the first successfull online store medium. Because they promised that if it goes down we will keep our games. Because they seem to care about the customer, or at least SO MUCH MORE than compareable medium's. Because they realized that you can not fight pirates so instead they have daily specials which for the likes of me actually make it more appealing to buy a game for cheap than go through the hassle of pirating it. And because it works. Still if Uplay and Origin one day become active competition ( Greenlightgaming and GoG may join those ranks IMHO ) I would love it... why ? Competition in a market is good :)

        1. @critialcloudkicker so it doesn't save you money or offer more variety? Can't you get hard copies of the games for about the same price?

Thursday, 18-Apr-13 11:05:56 UTC from web
          1. @pony Not in Holland, no. Steam is cheaper than hardcopies 7 out of 10 times

            1. @critialcloudkicker interesting. Maybe if I lived overseas I'd consider it a valuable service if I were a gamer.

              1. @pony Too bad steamcalculator.com is down right now or I could have pointed out all the ( 3 out of 10 ) hardcopies I bought and saved ( sometimes up to 8 Euro ) compared to buying it from Steam.

Thursday, 18-Apr-13 11:11:17 UTC from web
                1. @critialcloudkicker I'm usually willing to pay double when I know I'll get to actually keep something independent of any service.

                  1. @pony Same for me. But having the access to more games for cheaper than you could get them if you put a lot of hassle in it in arms reach, and for cheaper while you are at it. And all your friends on the same medium so you can make joining easier aswell as talking to eachother... Yea those are good incentives. Still yea I would have preferred to do everything hardcopy and Xfire or something

                    1. @critialcloudkicker good points. Yeah, if I ever get into gaming I might consider it for the less desirable games maybe.

                2. @critialcloudkicker well not usually, but sometimes. It depends on the product.

        2. @critialcloudkicker Unless it's in the contract and the contract is one they are legally obligated to fulfil, an informal statement "promising" a service is not binding.

Thursday, 18-Apr-13 11:16:47 UTC from StatusNet Desktop
          1. @ceruleanspark I do not recall signing a contract with Steam saying that I am prohibited from using the competitor's service platform

Thursday, 18-Apr-13 11:18:42 UTC from web
            1. @critialcloudkicker I am referring to the oft quoted "Promise" that all the DRM will be stripped from steam titles if Steam goes under.

Thursday, 18-Apr-13 11:19:45 UTC from StatusNet Desktop
              1. @ceruleanspark I am pretty sure that you recall that the value of a market is depending on a few factor's, one of the mayor factors being the faith the consumers have in it. Immagine that Steam does go down and a LOT of gamers lose their games. The backlash from the market would make it impossible to maintain a serivice platform like this for years to come, probably even a generation. I do not even deem it unthinkable that a diffrent company, even a shell company of EA, will buy out Valve just to keep the market from crashing. TL;DR version. If Steam goes down the market crashes for virtual game products. Noone wants that to happen, especially retailers who do online sales, and they will defend Steam from dying lest they die too

                1. @critialcloudkicker Not to mention the virulous amount of Pirates the death of Steam would bring. The game market itself might even come into peril.

Thursday, 18-Apr-13 11:27:58 UTC from web
                  1. @critialcloudkicker I pirate all my games anyway. The death of Steam would make no difference to me.

Thursday, 18-Apr-13 11:28:57 UTC from web
                    1. @zeldatra Some games are a pain in the nuts to pirate though. Others... Not so much... But when multiplayer is involved it is almost always a pain. Hence that is why I bought Borderlands2. ( yes I do have a hardcopy of that game )
