  1. Well I'm trying to do a House-aligned playthrough of Fallout: New Vegas, but I very really truly hate him and the terrible asshole things he says :-/

    • @scribus Interesting, he's my favourite faction to side with on the grounds of pragmatism, he's the only one with a plan (and the actual capability to make it happen) to make humanity go anywhere other than "we'll just be hobos in perpetuity"

He might not be incredibly likable, but in a survival scenario that's irrelevant.

about a year ago in context
    • @nerthos Yeah, I want to not hate him - I mean, a retro-future spaceVegas? Hell, yeah!! He's not even that unlikable, there's a wry sort of amusement to his bearing. But he's too egocentric; he's not preserving humanity, he's feeding his ego and seeking to create a thrallhood underclass to prop HIM up. Ultimately, I don't consider him sufficiently distinct from Caesar. Both cling to old-world ideals and play up some fantasy of the "inevitability" of "their" power. So, I kill him, take his city, and in my mind carry on with developing the space plans in a little more cooperative, ground-up fashion. (Though in all honesty a spacefaring future would be just as hellish as the vaults so iunno w/e i guess lol) Also I make The King governor or something :p

    • @scribus That all sounds good until you factor in the kind of human resource you're dealing with in Fallout. Ironically the tv show is the best illustration of this, with the main character trying to behave like a civilized person and consistently getting banana'd by everyone.

House's narcissistic approach is a necessity in the world he's operating, without the army of robots forcing the wastelanders to work at gunpoint nothing will get done (example: they're still living in shacks near 200 years after the war)
Plus, he has civilized some factions already, so it's not like he won't uplift the competent and decent wastelanders into better positions. He has to do that for any space settling plan to work, since good people are needed to populate those colonies.

Sometimes, a competent megalomaniac is the only option that can get the job done.

    • @zeldatra Yeah. I had to look up a few times. Thankfully Steam displayed the remaining hours until release. I had prealoaded it yesterday, however minutes after the official release it wasn't able to start because my Steam client wasn't aware of the release. A restart of the client fixed it.

I, uh, will not, and unless I find myself with unfathomable wealth in the next five years, you can probably count on me not ever “happening” to be in Dubai.

  7. I almost crashed my car. I was driving on the Autobahn while it was heavily snowing. There was so much snow that snow was piling up and it was only feasible to drive in the tracks of the other cars. I got caught up in the side of the tyre tracks and was skidding and slipping left and right so much I almost spin out. Luckily my experiences with racing games could avoid that by steering against the skidding direction.

  8. Children should play a bootleg console at least once in their lives. A good 'ol famiclone. A NES on a chip or anything that promises 99999999 games in one but they are repeats or just start at a different level. This kind of disappointment and wonder is a unique brew of an experience that is both cheap and rich in questionable fun. A lie with an upside. Bonus points if they are actually rom hacks with the weirdest promises.

    • @adiwan As a child I had an N64 controller that you would plug into a tv and it would load up 900 NES and arcade roms, probably less than a hundred of which were unique games. Kids today now can get handheld that do the same thing on Temu, everything is properly labeled, the emulators don’t run at half speed, sometimes they play like PS2 games and Fluffle Puff, you can load your own on an sd card… it just ain’t the same.

Tuesday, 11-Feb-25 23:30:48 UTC in context
    • @zeldatra For some reason I stumble upon reviews of those emulation machines and even now they are not always delivering the proper performance to even run NES games at a smooth performance. PS2 games, even PS1 and Dreamcast are a joke. There are only few exceptions where they run well enough for an enjoyable experience. The famiclone I had in the 90s was a weird "handheld" one. It was a big black "Game Gear"-like case without a screen that plugged directly into a AC/DC adaptor and it needed to be connected with a RF coax cable to the TV. It really sucked as over time both power and TV plugs on it got loose.

  12. The video editor Kdenlive is not so bad. I've been playing with it since it is stable for a long while and the last time I used it was 10 years ago when I was doing my Bachelor thesis. And back then it was in a buggy alpha state. There are however still tons of room for improvements. Especially in the effects department, and the adding and removal of video and audio tracks. For some reason once the project has been initialized you cannot add more tracks. In the audio department I'd like to have bezier curves in the track view to adjust the volume. At least it isn't crashing.

    • @adiwan I've had a recurring issue with video editors where I cut down a large clip to the part I want, then apply some kind of speed change or reverse it or something, and suddenly the clip I'd made is a different portion of the original video. I guess I'm asking if this ever happened to you at all, and/or if this new one does it at all? lol

Thursday, 30-Jan-25 18:52:38 UTC in context
    • @scribus So far it hasn't happened to me. In fact I did a speed change to a small portion and it correctly identified that I can enter a maximum speed value until it doesn't fit on the track because a following clip is in its way. However I have to enter that value manually. Clunky but it works.

    • @scribus Cleaning cloths have sometimes strangest odors. Whenever I got free one-time-use ones they smelled more often than not very unappealing. Similarly, the wiper fluid (with anti-freeze) for my car I bought for this winter has the nastiest smells close to the point wanting to replace it. The one I had before was way better and had the usual smell of isopropanol, which I prefer.

  15. Ooof... Dodged a bullet. BambuLab 3D printers are now unrecommendable. I low-key thought about getting one but BambuLab went full on locking down the firmware to prevent 3rd-party software to connect to the printer. They had in the terms of service that they would block printing alltogether if the firmware won't be updated. Now they are gaslighting the users that this isn't the case as they have changed their website.

  18. The backpack I'm using for over 15 years is still holding well enough but I feel like I've grown out of it. It was fine for a good while but my use-case has shifted dramatically. Nowadays I use it for holding all my bike stuff and for some emergency storage whenever my shopped items don't fit in my bags. The stuff I have in my backpack right now gets more in the way lately because the items are oddly shaped for the compartments they are. A poncho, umbrella, small first-aid kit, repair tools, hand pump, tote bags, paper tissues, N95-masks, pens. I wish I could sew one myself.

    • @scribus It is not without its faults. A few music choices are not so smooth and the brutality made me flinch a few times. However in general I enjoyed the story. The characters were believable and the choices they made were properly inferred by the culture and past actions. What the series did well is to reveal the exact amount of backstory and story beats to create tension and make me fear of the outcome of a few characters as death is cheap in that world. I also seen some glowing recommendations of that series and last night I was bored enough to jump into it, so much that I was on the verge of binging it way past midnight. I think it is a very good weekend binge but be aware not to start it too late in the day. Plan at least 6 hours with breaks to watch it.

  21. https://youtu.be/G6wlpkOSLI0 Modified Chitose's basic attack to look more like something Haruka would've learned through observation. First two hits are Chitose's regular rush combo, but the third is now an edited version of Kiryu's Dragon style high kick.

Monday, 30-Dec-24 22:53:17 UTC from web
    • @zeldatra second hit is also slightly changed in that it now launches for a slightly flashier looking hit as originally it lacked impact. I'm told this makes it impossible for enemies to dodge mid combo which is probably why RGG didn't do this to begin with but they already were not dodging mid combo very much so i don't personally think it changes the balance too much

  22. The state of Linux desktop environments for old hardware (i.e. ASUS EEE PC 1000H) is abysmal. I love KDE but the current version is unusable. The same goes for GNOME, which is furthermore hampered by being unusable because of UX reasons. Even the "classic" Gnome is horrible performance-wise. MATE is a tad better but I don't like it. The only real choice I have is XFCE. It is fine with a huge GNOME-influenced asterisk. I'm looking into Enlightenment but it also irks me a lot.

Friday, 20-Dec-24 11:41:05 UTC from web
    • @zeldatra At least you got practice, even when it's not the best. I'm a software developer for over 7 years and in my last project (ended a few days ago) it is littered with crimes I did. Mostly because I was not given enough time to do it properly. It is of great value to know which "technical debt" one has caused and how to mitigate it next time. There are only a few principles one has to follow to write good code like writing modular code that has as few dependencies as possible to solve the problem, naming the variables and functions and classes clear enough such that they convey their intent unmistakably, and writing code that can be reused. The last point is a nice to have but for a small project it is probably too much hassle except it is really needed more than once in the program. Otherwise software is malleable enough to be rewritten with the power given by the knowledge of hindsight, meaning good ol' refactoring.

  27. Also Yagami (and Kaito’s) entries in the party database seem to genuinely stem from RGG just adding protagonists sequentially with each new game going back to Yakuza 6; Kiryu is 1, Majima is 2, Yagami is 3, Ichiban is 4, and his yakuza 7 party + Masumi Arakawa fills out the remainder before we suddenly start getting LJ side characters; seems the ones who follow you around worked internally like Y7’s party members even though most of them don’t ever join you in combat.

  29. Weird factoids about playable Haruka:
-she is capable of doing all of Kiryu’s minigames although because she is much shorter some of her animations are a bit weird, IE she doesn’t reach the handlebars in Can Quest. Not sure how easy the fix for those things is because although I COULD tweak the animations, they’re meant to be universal so switching the party leader to anyone else breaks the animations for them.
-she CANNOT play most of Kasuga’s minigames, he takes over for those. Likely has something to do with the game switching to his cutscene model or something like that, I haven’t looked too deep into it yet.

Wednesday, 04-Dec-24 18:37:35 UTC from web
    • -she CAN however go to Dondoko Island. The only issue I’ve found there is that she has no voice lines for greeting villagers, although she does not reuse Kasuga’s like I thought she would; she simply doesn’t say anything at all, opting to wave instead. That’s interesting as hell. Pulling audio from other Rie Kugimiya/Xanthe Hyunh projects probably fixes this.
-When taking selfies she either starts speaking in Kiryu’s voice (when in Japan) or Kasuga’s (in Hawaii). Not sure if this is fixable.
