That relatable moment when you have to spend 40 minutes on the phone with Western Union because one of your customers is a Russian national on an international sanctions list sending money to saboteurs in Ukraine
Tuesday, 08-Mar-22 19:05:39 UTC from web-
@zeldatra Wow. That sounds, uh, fun....
-
@zeldatra It's surprising that people actually use Western Union. And if they do it is probably not legitimate. I always associate it as a service to send money to scammers or other fraudsters.
-
@adiwan I live in a town with a super substantial population of middle-aged immigrants so most of them have no idea what Venmo is, they’ve been doing Western Union since the 90s so there’s no going back now
-
-
like, right ther other day some pople on FB were saying they were suprised at my age because they thought i was 17. what is even wrong about those people

Putin or more like Poo-Teen
Wednesday, 02-Mar-22 05:58:01 UTC from web-
@adiwan Nah, that sounds too much like talking crap on poutine
-
@scribus My bad. I don't want to put poutine's name in vain. I just looked up how it is pronounced https://translate.google.com/?sl=auto&tl=de&text=%D0%9F%D1%83%D1%82%D0%B8%D0%BD&op=translate It appears to sound more like "poot yen"
-
@adiwan Oh yeah, that would be a more French pronunciation, wouldn't it?
-

gonna use Australia instead, what the Potato Knishes are they gonna do about it
Saturday, 26-Feb-22 07:46:19 UTC from web-
@zeldatra Better hope the Emus don't rise again
-
@scribus the big disincentive to using Australia now, besides the emu uprising, is that it ruins a joke in Swole Foods. One script has a borderline senile old man recounting a battle he fought in Australia; with his senility being the joke. But then a script that’s placed later in the timeline has a character who works for the government mention the same event, making it more credible; a third script then finally reveals that in this universe, NATO fought an atomic war against Australia. I might just generically say “a country in the East” or something like that instead.

The house I could potentially afford was already taken when I put down a house viewing request. Of course.

@adiwan same :/

Start with something super unbelievable, that way the stuff that’s only mildly unbelievable is pretty believable in comparison.
Sunday, 30-Jan-22 04:52:32 UTC from web-
@zeldatra Just about the exact inverse of what I'm trying to do. Want them to believe a near-future cyberpunk urban center, with human/animal hybrids, which eventually develops real-deal Magic and ends up making contact with >3rd dimensional intelligence? Start with something standard, like a murder procedural, so they're not entirely flippin' lost lol
-
@scribus the way I see it - since *my* universe is usually grounded pretty firmly in reality, starting with some really crazy grape off the bat means nothing’s off the table. Futurama’s first season goes from 1999 New York to literally the edge of the universe, so for the entire rest of the show they could go literally anywhere in between.
-
-
Welp, the “my employee is a neo-Nazi” situation has very rapidly escalated into “we now have to have security on-site during business hours until further notice”
Saturday, 29-Jan-22 21:48:54 UTC from web-
@zeldatra How lively
-
@zeldatra I wonder how much of this kind of crap you won't be able to use in Swole Foods because nobody would believe it even in a cartoon
-
@scribus it’s probably helped by the fact that I’m planning to do a couple of over-the-top high concept episodes right off the bat so people don’t start telling me I’ve jumped the shark after I do something really out there. “Kat’s new co-worker is a neo-Nazi” is waaaay less over-the-top than “Kat accidentally joins a mafia family after volunteering at an old folks’ home”.

I am driving my car to and from work two miles down the road, and once a month I make a round trip to Richmond, I’m not racing at batcavein Talladega, just give me the one that works.

I have to replace all four of my tires and I’m choosing to blame Governor Youngkin for not immediately abolishing the state inspection process like he probably said he would.
Thursday, 27-Jan-22 22:39:45 UTC from web-
@zeldatra ugh I hate that, because yeah it's usually on "sale" to buy 3 and get one "free," and sure it's convenient to not have to worry about which ones are the old ones, but damnit four expensive things all at one time?? :(
-
@scribus could tell the guy was getting paid extra to push a particular brand too… he showed me the most expensive one first and was like “this one’s good for snow”, then showed me a seemingly identical one from another brand and was like “this one’s ok too, I guess… it’s made for all weather conditions… but it’s really not as good, I wouldn’t even bother”
-
-
OK so maybe Sims 4 is not total and complete garbage, but I still need extensive cheats and mods just to get the basics handled and they broke too many fundamental things into way too many individual DLCs, and EA is still knee-deep trashwater
Monday, 24-Jan-22 23:56:13 UTC from web-
@scribus modding the sims 4 is so overly complicated too because you need to update them about as often as the game updates which is often
-
-
I’m thinking about these things because I’m about to get stranded at work because of a snowstorm so I’m gonna have a lot of time to myself.
Sunday, 16-Jan-22 15:25:00 UTC from web-
@zeldatra At least there will be plenty of empty shelves to bunk on
-
@scribus funny thing about that: our fresh truck came in finally and the dry shelves have been fully stocked for weeks, no idea where the media is getting those photos of bare shelves in the DC area
-
@zeldatra I've seen a couple of bare shelves out here, but I suspect a lot of the news photos come after-hours or something.
-

Hey, if you have HBO Max or access to a cable subscription: I have some friends who worked on Smiling Friends, [adult swim]’s new animated horror comedy. The sixth episode features a Bakshi-inspired character who was animated by some friends of mine, but the whole show in general is very funny. The show hits HBO Max on Feb 9th, and if you have cable, you can watch the entire series on adultswin.com right now. If you could give it a watch, that’d be real cool, because we really wanna see a second season get greenlit and online viewership is pretty much how they decide what gets renewed these days.

Damn found out on my bro's discord server that my hs gf's husband and son both have breakthrough covid infections
Thursday, 30-Dec-21 17:57:33 UTC from web-
@scribus I may or may not have had COVID over Christmas, couldn’t get tested though because no appointments were open. Whatever I did have is gone now so I guess it’s moot now, but I’m one of the only people at work who didn’t get a booster shot and the other one who didn’t was out sick before and after me, so it’s an easy conclusion to come to.
-
@zeldatra Ex GF reports 65% of people at her Xmas are now infected, with the boosted faring the best so far. Shame is, it's a total bone trying to get the booster. My grandma was told by her doctor that the earliest appointment was February; then, at Walgreen's, the guy in line behind her asked the cashier about boosters and she jumped in on the spot, no waiting! I got mine, no appointment, from the CVS in Target, but my brother went to (a different) Walgreen's even with no line, and was told to make an appointment.

oh boy hey guys seriously don’t ever say anything bad about Disney films
Wednesday, 29-Dec-21 21:27:41 UTC from web-
@zeldatra You can get away with some smacktalk to the Mouse in Anaheim, a lot of residents are pretty burned by DLand
-
@scribus I am actually, no joke, getting accusations of racism thrown at me because I think Disney’s movies are all stylistically samey now, which really says a lot at how starved for representation we, as Latinos, are, that we feel obligated to FrankerZiate a less than perfect film with Latinos in it because we think it’s the best we’re ever gonna get.
-
@zeldatra Man, that's exactly what They're hoping for, for everyone "else" to be content with scraps and crumbs, why give it to them on a digital blue platter? ugh
-
-
got a speed run world record and I’m not proud of the category: The Sims 2 social worker%
Wednesday, 29-Dec-21 03:20:17 UTC from web-
@scribus If you have the discs, yes. If not, there are no legal ways to get it digitally at ALL anymore. EA took it off of Origin because they were no longer supporting it and only previous owners can download it. For a while there was a product code you could put in to trigger a download but I think k it’s been taken off now.
-
@zeldatra Damn. It seems that if I can source a pre-2012 disc for Sims 3 (2009 release) I can play without Origin, but I don't know if the expansions will just put me back in the same place :-/
-
@scribus I have the Steam version of The Sims 3 with all the expansions that didn’t require Origin. Ben a while since I’ve played it though so I dunno if they changed the requirements.

Pro tip: the cashiers at grocery stores just sell the items, they don’t necessarily know how to use them. If you don’t even know what the hell you’re buying, you probably don’t need it.

@zeldatra Man my buddy works in a hardware store, some of the inane customer questions he fields.... Whoo!!

@scribus you can always tell when someone’s building their first pipe bomb. Amateurs…

@zeldatra Yeah, I guess kludging an inappropriate connector into your gas barbecue could be an (accidental) first bomb build... lol

Dramatically redrawing voting district borders after every election is insane.
Wednesday, 08-Dec-21 13:02:51 UTC from web-
@adiwan That’s the America we’re about to be living in because one particular party spent most of the 2010s building the ultimate gerrymanders, only to have it completely fall apart when the suburbs turned on them. The new legislative maps for the decade are going to have very few competitive districts - you stay on your side, I’ll stay on mine, etc.
-
@zeldatra Politicians choosing voters instead of the right way around
-
@zeldatra For a country that celebrates freedom it's so sad that it kicks an essential pillar of democracy, that can give a lot of freedoms, to the ground because a minority is power-hungry and restricts these freedoms for their own gain.

“I have my PRINCIPLES,” I say to my mother when she asks why I haven’t made six figures on NFTs like the 19 year old crypto artist who lives down the street
Saturday, 04-Dec-21 00:54:45 UTC from web-
@zeldatra I should get in on that. Any time I get involved, the market crashes... lol
-
@scribus I wouldn’t. The whole thing’s a pyramid scheme. I’ve looked into it. Forgetting the environmental impact - my only personal qualm atm, though apparently that’ll change soon - something like 90% of NFT sales are back-and-forth transactions and the remaining 10% only profit if they’re the original seller. AFAIK very few profit from investment.
-
@zeldatra Cool, good news, I'm lazy anyway haha
-
-
I cannot believe that I am still STUPID USELESS IDIOTIC MORON FAILSOME enough to ever think that it's going to take me anything less than TWO GODROTTEN HOURS to accomplish a TEN! MILE!! DRIVE!!!
Friday, 03-Dec-21 04:11:02 UTC from web-
@scribus kinda batcaveed how Los Angeles is simultaneously not a place to be walking around like New York, but ALSO has traffic as bad as New York
-
@zeldatra My town's got about three places to cross its titular river. One is a freeway, another turned out to be closed with no warning, and the third had some wantwit who managed to cause an ambulance-worthy crash at a mere 10-15 MPH.
-
@scribus more or less why getting to Maryland from here is such a hassle despite the town literally being on the state line. Should take five minutes. Ends up taking an hour and a half because there are only two bridges across the Potomac.

If I had to guess, I would wager that Fiverr made their webpage with high schoolers hired off of Craigslist. I haven't seen an interface this godrotten awful since I tried using Gmail. Why does nobody have any clue how people use computers, when we all use them all day every day??
Tuesday, 30-Nov-21 02:53:20 UTC from web-
@scribus This is exactly how I feel about the newest version of Flash, they redesigned the interface for the first time in like twenty years and it feels like it was designed by a guy who’s never used Flash before
-
@zeldatra How are we living in the Year of The Woz 71 and Netflix still needs to be told EVERY EPISODE to turn on the godrotten subtitles?
-
-
Thought I was getting pulled over today on my drive home from a friend’s house. Pulled to the side, he sped right past me. Wherever he was going, every single cop in the county was also going because I saw about twenty squad cars all heading in the same direction at various points during the drive.
Monday, 29-Nov-21 01:57:07 UTC from web-
@zeldatra Yeah that's not a "check the news" moment
-
@scribus that's the thing about whenever i see something like this, i can never find anything about it on local news because i live in the DC-Baltimore media market, so, anything that happens here is immediately overshadowed by two different mass shootings
-
-
Well, I finally got desperate enough to launch a Fiverr page https://www.fiverr.com/jlbesq/read-and-record-voiceover if anybody needs/wants my voice for something, or knows someone who does.

Also a friend and I have been trying to write a script for a live-action comedy film centering around a guy who spends years undercover in a New York crime family, it’s set in the 2020s, and I watching this while thinking about that made me think about how there aren’t that many mafia films set in the modern day, it’s all about the 70s and 80s and stuff, The Sopranos is probably as modern as it gets. Would be interesting to explore how the mob operates in the internet age and in a post-9/11 world. Frank Cali was assassinated by a QAnon supporter. That’s insane. The boss of the Gambino crime family, who ran the show for years, got taken out by some guy who thought Trump wanted him to because he was told so on 4Chan. Not gonna see that kiwi in Goodfellas.

@zeldatra Twins?

@scribus Had to have the police take a guy home because he was incredibly drunk, was just eating deli meat that he took off the shelves, and then fell asleep underneath a bench in the store. Problem is he lived really close by, so after the cops left he just… walked back over here and was back in literally half an hour later.

@zeldatra ...wow

actively depressed about the Kenosha outcome
Saturday, 20-Nov-21 16:46:32 UTC from web-
@scribus I don’t have much else to add that others have already said better, but if I were a gun advocate (well, more than I already am) I’d be absolutely furious that the kid wasn’t locked up on at least the gun charge. Taking an illegal gun to a protest across state lines and then killing three guys with legally acquired guns really undercuts a lot of pro-gun arguments you usually hear.
-
@zeldatra *that others haven’t, dammit
