@starshine @atticus If you're just looking to write on virutal sheet music, Sibelius will make you're life a lot easier. It's pretty intuitive. This e-book is dirt cheap and will get you using it in about as much time as it promises; http://www.amazon.com/Learn-Sibelius-Hour-ebook/dp/B004GKMZ12

@atticus personally I'm better versed in trackers, e.g. Renoise, OpenMPT, Schism Tracker, Milky Tracker, etc. (roughly in descending order of functionality) They're surprisingly versatile, once you get over the rather steep learning curve of entering everything one note at a time, and in hexadecimal :D

@atticus If you're looking to go the free route, MuseScore is an open source scoring program, but I've had much better luck with Sibelius.

@atticus A notes-on-staff or piano-roll sort of program would probably suit you better, then. Maybe have a look at Cubase, Reason, and maybe Fruity Loops Studio. (Disclaimer: I've never actually used any of those.) You might also want to have a look at Ableton Live.

@atticus Tons. What sort of music are you intending to do, are you planning on using external MIDI hardware, VST instruments, or plain .wav samples, and do you know much about music theory or are you just getting into it?

@atticus Groovy. A lot of people have recommended Airsoft GI, but I wasn't massively impressed. Not bad, but eh. My problem is I'm looking to also build a Golgo-13 costume, so I'm after stupidly specific stuff.
