    2. @scribus If the HDD in my computer failed, I. Would. Freak out. Almost 800GB used up on there, and so much work would be lost.

      1. @pinhooves Backup early, backup often.

        1. @scribus There are quite a lot of things I would back up, but most I don't know where to find. D:

          1. @pinhooves That will depend on what the data is (files? Programs?) And what your OS is.

            1. @scribus I do have an External HDD, but some of it's already used up by old videos I've rendered. Hopefully I can find I'll find the things I would need to backup.

              1. @pinhooves Indeed. Data loss sucks.

    3. @scribus Buy a case of DVDs and write all of your files there. I did that for one of my older rigs. Actually, I should probably set up a backup of my own....

      1. @thatonepony It's for a friend's drive, which is already not being read by anything. It shows up, so it's not mechanical. I'm afraid it got magneted at some point.

    4. @scribus What exactly happened?

Wednesday, 07-Dec-11 02:38:43 UTC from web
      1. @nerthos Not entirely sure, it's a friend's rig. Shee said the power supply died, she has a virus or some virii, even she isn't totally sure. But I built a new-used-Frankenstein rig and it works but can't read the drive from the Ubuntu drive I set up. I tried with just her HDD and it gave a "Windows didn't start properly, choose safe or normal etc..." screen and every option reboots the machine.

        1. @scribus You can't read from Ubuntu: that means the HDD is formated in NTFS. Put the disk as slave in a computer running on windows.

          1. @nerthos I could have sworn Ubuntu read NTFS...

            1. @scribus Try partition magic. I always use that program to fix HDD problems.

              1. @nerthos I'll keep that in mind when I return to take another stab at it. Thanks!

            2. @scribus Not that I know of. Just try partitioning it, or reformatting on a windows machine.

              1. @thatonepony Turns out it needs a driver, and she lacks "real" internet (just a Verizon deal on her netbook). Guess I'll be tethering my phone again...

        2. @scribus Are you running it on Ubantu?

Wednesday, 07-Dec-11 02:44:02 UTC from web
          1. @thatonepony It's all I had handy, and I knew it would circumvent her virii.

            1. @scribus I say virtual console Partition Magic.

          2. @thatonepony It's "ubuntu" not "ubantu"

            1. @derps A man can make a spelling mistake. Those occasionally happen.

              1. @thatonepony This stuff is abolished to me. Not allowed. Except on Mondays or Saturdays.
